Fri, June 13, 7 pm: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony general meeting; the public is invited.  Showing of the "eye-opening," award-winning video "Blue-Eyed" with discussion led by Rev. Angela Taylor Perry, reconciling minister of Faith Christian Reformed Church, Holland. "Blue-Eyed" depicts teacher Jane Elliott and a group of people who were arbitrarily assigned blue or brown eye color and then treated as inferior or superior based on that characteristic.  Children's group, UNITY, for ages 4 to 14, also will meet.  392-5086 or 396-2201.  At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

 

Thurs, June 19, 6 to 8 pm: Neighborhood Park Celebration: meet neighbors, take part in family activities including children's games, youth basketball, face painting, etc. Sponsored by City of Holland Neighborhood Liaison Program and Police Department Community Relations Commission. At Rosa Parks Green, College Ave and West 19th St, Holland.

 

Sat, June 21, 1 to 6 pm:  Seventh annual celebration of Juneteenth in Holland.  Includes: keynote speech by Rev. Wayne Coleman; music by Silver Star Singers of Chicago, Kevin Kollins and African drummers, and Lakeshore Idol winner LaSondra Leffler; information booths; children's activities.  Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebration commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States; from its origin in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, the observance as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the U.S. and beyond.
