Mon, Nov 3, through Sat, Nov 8, 7 and 9 pm: Film, "The Visitor"; the comedy/drama follows 62-year-old professor Walter Vale "who is sleepwalking through life."  His college sends him to Manhattan for a conference and Walter is later surprised to find a Syrian man and his Senegalese girlfriend in his apartment, victims of a real estate scheme; Walter allows them to stay.  Touched by his kindness, Tarek, the Syrian, teaches Walter to play the African drum.  Rated PG-13; in English and Arabic with English subtitles.  $6 admission, $5 seniors.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

Thurs, Nov 6, 4 pm: Dr. Renée Canady presents "Continuing the Conversation of Global Health: An Examination of National Health Inequities."  Sponsored by Chrysler Corp. and presented in collaboration with Acting on AIDS, Black Student Union, Poverty Medicine Focus Group, and Hope College Office of Multicultural Education.  At Martha Miller Center First Floor Rotunda, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Nov 6, 6:30 pm: Community dinner sponsored by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) at its new offices at 16th St and Pine Ave, Holland.  Cost is $20 per person, or $35 for two.  To reserve a place, contact LAUP at laup@sbcglobal.net or call (616) 392-5058.

 

Fri, Nov 7, 5:30 pm: Fourth annual fundraiser for Reciprocal Language Partnership, "Go Shopping with RLP."  Mexican buffet served from 5:30 to 7 pm.  Auction, ticket drop raffle, door prizes; auction items include jewelry, art, lessons for golf and fly fishing, services. Fri, Nov 14, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony; everyone is welcome.  "Why People Don't See Discrimination…and What You Can Do About It," by Dr. Mary Inman, professor of psychology at Hope College.  At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

Sat, Nov 15, 7 pm: Images: A Reflection of Cultures: performances by Hope College international students.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.
