Wed, Nov 12, 6:30 pm:  Think Sustainable Film Series: "Affluenza" is a one-hour film that explores the high social and environmental costs of materialism and overconsumption. At Herrick District Library auditorium, River Ave between 12th and 13th Sts, Holland.

 

Thurs, Nov 13, 11:30 am to 1 pm: Soup For All lunch to raise funds for Ottawa Area Housing Coalition.  Lunch of soup and bread costs $10.  Two locations: Holland Civic Center, Pine Ave at 9th St, and St. Patrick's Church, Grand Haven. 

 

Thurs, Nov 13, 6 pm: "9/11 to Postville: A New Detour in the War on Terror," by Prof. Erik Camayd-Freixas of Florida State University, who interpreted for people who were jailed during the largest immigration raid in U.S. history, which took place on May 12, 2008, in Postville, Iowa.  Sponsored by Grand Valley State University Latin American Studies.  At GVSU Kirkhof Center, Room 204 Pere Marquette, in Allendale.

 

**Thurs, Nov 13, 7 pm: "Act on Racism" performance by the Act on Racism group at Grand Valley State University to "increase awareness and combat issues of racism using real life instances told via educative theater."  After the performance, there will be an opportunity for the audience to discuss controversial issues regarding race and ethnicity.  Sponsored by Hope's Asian Perspective Association (HAPA).  At Hope College Schaap Science Center, Room 1019, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 14, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony; everyone is welcome.  "Why Some People Don't See Discrimination…and What You Can Do About It," by Dr. Mary Inman, professor of psychology at Hope College.  At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

 

Sat, Nov 15, 1 pm to 3 pm: Co-editors Robert Swierenga and William Van Appledorn will sign copies of their new book "Old Wing Mission: Cultural Interchange as Chronicled by George and Arvilla Smith in their Work with Chief Waukazoo's Ottawa Band on the  West Michigan Frontier"; copies available at signing for $35 (retail price is $49).  At Old Wing Mission house, 5298 East 40th, a half-mile east of Waverly Rd, Holland.

**Sat, Nov 15, 7 pm: Images: A Reflection of Cultures: performances by Hope College international students.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Nov 18, 7 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series hosts Hip Hop performance poet Toni Blackman; she has been a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department and has performed in 16 countries.  She holds a master's degree in organizational communication from Howard University and is founder and director of Freestyle Union, a cipher workshop in New York City that uses free styling "as a tool to encourage social responsibility, especially among young people."  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Nov. 20, 4 pm: "Stopping Roots of Evil: Causes and Solutions of Genocide," presented by Dr. Mary Inman, professor of psychology at Hope College.  Part of the college Amnesty International Focus Week.  At Van Wylen Library, Granberg Room, on Hope College campus.

 

Thurs, Nov. 20, 4:15 pm: "Racial Harmony—What do Christians Have to Offer?" by sociologist and author George Yancey.  At Schapp Science Center, Room 1019, on Hope College campus.
