TODAY, Sept 20, 7 pm: Presentation on "the moral issues inherent in food-related social policies and personal decisions," by Dr. L. Shannon Jung, author of "Hunger and Happiness: Feeding the Hungry, Nourishing Our Souls."   Sponsored by Hope College Office of Student Life, First-Year Seminar Program, and Hope United for Justice, a student group.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th, Holland.

Tues, Sept  21, 6:30 pm: "When Caring Becomes a Burden: Recovery from Rescuing." Information for people helping loved ones with mental illness and addiction.  Sponsored by Ottawa Co. Tues, Sept 21, 7 pm: Documentary film, "Little Town of Bethlehem": This story of three men of different faiths and their lives in Israel and Palestine "explores each man's choice of nonviolent action amid a culture of overwhelming violence."  Panel discussion follows. Sponsored by Hope College International Education Office, Department of Modern and Classical Languages (Arabic program), and HopeEquals.  At Martha Miller Center, Fried/Hemenway Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Sept 28 (through Nov 16), 6:30 pm to 8:50 pm: Holland First program, "to understand our community through the eyes of diversity." Explores personal leadership and cultural awareness in economic development/business, community resources, law enforcement, government, education, art and culture. Facilitator is Dante Villarreal.  Free. A program of the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce; sponsors: Chemical Bank and Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Blue Care. Tues, Sept 28, 6:45 pm: Celebration of 90th anniversary of League of Women Voters and the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.  Local women who have been politically active will be honored at the event, including ACEH member Becky Arenas, for her work in educating and registering voters and for her early candidacies for city council and state representative.   At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

Thurs, Sept 30, through Oct. 9, 8 pm:  Play: "Lines: The Lived Experience of Race."  The "story of race, discrimination, and diversity in West Michigan," produced by Actors' Theatre and based on interviews with more than 150 area residents.
