Muste Lecture: "Islam and the Practice of Non-violence," by Adam Ericksen, education director of the Raven Foundation.  Series  commemorates the life and work of A. J. Muste, Hope College alumnus and activist for peace and justice.  At Graves Hall, College Ave at 11^th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 27, 6 pm until 9 pm: El Día de los Muertos Celebration and Costume Procession.  Food, music, dance, crafts; Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca; Frida Kahlo look-alike contest; face painting.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8^th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 28, 7 pm: First of four community sessions "to explore cultural and religious roots of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, groups that are making a difference, and possible actions to bring about resolution of key issues."  Moderator is Rev. John Kleinheksel Sr, a long-time student of the region.  Other sessions are Thurs, Nov 11; Mon, Nov 22; and Thurs, Dec 9.  NOTE CORRECT LOCATION: At Herrick District Library downstairs, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 28, 7 pm: "U.S. Policy—Fostering Instability in the Middle East and Insecurity at Home," by retired U.S. Army colonel Ann Wright, who served in the army,  army reserves, and Foreign Service, resigning her last post to protest U.S. policy in the Middle East and to work for peace.  Sponsored by coalition of community groups.  At Unity of Michigan, 202 Bourdon St, Muskegon.

Thurs, Nov 4, 7 pm: Native American Heritage Celebration: "Forgotten Warriors: 'Company K' in the Civil War," with historian Chris Czopek; honors Native American sharpshooters recruited from Michigan tribes to fight in the Civil War.  Dr. David Schock will show part of his film, "Road to Andersonville," featuring interviews with Native American veterans; introduction by Roger Williams, elder of the Pokagon Potawatomi tribe.  Sponsored by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education.  At Martha Miller Center, Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, corner of Columbia Ave and 10^th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 5, 7:30 pm: Holland Is Ready Film Series: "Big Eden," comedy of an artist who returns from New York to his Montana hometown and various relationships.  Holland Is Ready is a community group working for the safety, rights, and inclusion of GLBT persons in the Lakeshore area.  At Park Theatre, River Ave between 10^th and 11^th Sts, Holland.

Wed, Oct 20, 7 pm: "On the Border of a New America: Wall of Shadows," by Barbara Martinez Jitner, filmmaker, human rights activist, and inspiration behind the 2008 film "Bordertown,"  based on her research about the Mexican town of Juarez, where more than 400 women have been murdered.  Martinez Jitner studies "the legacy of Latinos in the U.S. and how what is happening on the southern border affects this community and the entire country, creating a dichotomy in the Latino national identity." Free, part of 16^th annual Diversity Lecture Series.  At Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain Street, NE, Grand Rapids.

Thurs, Oct 14, 7 pm (Hope jazz group at 6:30 pm): Presentation by fiction writer Cristina Garcia, author of five novels (including "Dreaming in Cuban," "The Agüero Sisters"); editor of anthologies of Latino/a literature; and writer of works for children and a collection of poetry.  She will read from her latest book, "The Lady Matador's Hotel." COMMUNITY OPP0RTUNITIES:

(1) The Center of African American Art and History is creating a documentary on African American life in Holland prior to the 1950s.  If you have memorabilia (photos, letters, yearbooks, etc.) depicting this era, please contact Ruth Coleman or Dr. Vicki-Lynn at Hope College, (616) 836-8559 or (616) 990-6551.  They will meet with you at the Center at 16^th and River Ave or at a location you choose. 

 

(2) VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CALLING ALL COLORS:  The Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance needs volunteers to facilitate morning or afternoon dialogue sessions with small groups of students at the Calling All Colors conference at Hope College, Monday, Oct 18 (middle school students) and/or Tuesday, Oct 19 (high schoolers).   Required training will take place in Holland Oct 13 and in Grand Haven Oct 14 (attend one or the other).

 

Volunteers also are needed for afternoon Mix-It-Up activities, and for sharing a cultural dance and a teaching session with the students.
