TONIGHT, Fri, Oct 8, 7 pm: Documentary, "Viva La Causa," the story of César Chávez and the farmworker justice movement; discussion led by Rev. Andrés Fierro, of Crossroad Chapel in Holland.  General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony; everyone is welcome.  At Holland City Hall, 2nd floor training room, 270 S River, Holland.

 

TONIGHT, Fri, Oct 8, 7 pm until 11 pm: Concert for the Cause II, a benefit for Community Action House; features local bands and Bob Dylan cover songs. (Visit Holland Museum's new Bob Dylan photography retrospective before the show, 31 West 10th St.)  Admission to concert is canned goods or a cash donation.  Cash bar.  At Park Theatre, 248 S. River Ave, Holland.

 

Mon, Oct 11, 7 pm: Forum on issues of peace with justice, related to Palestine and Israel.  This open, moderated discussion is a follow-up to the Sept 30 event.  Moderators are Rev. John Kleinheksel, Sr., with Dr. Tom Arendshorst, and Rev. Dr. Sharon Arendshorst, who presented the Sept. 30 program on Palestine and Israel.  At Hope Church, 77 West 11th St, Holland.

 

Mon, Oct 11 through November 2: El Día de los Muertos art exhibition, by four artists—photography, wood sculpture, and ofrendas (home altars decorated for the Day of the Dead celebration.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 13, 6 pm: Hispanic Heritage Celebration event, "The Undocumented Experience," in collaboration with La Raza Unida.  At Martha Miller Center, Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, 10th St at Columbia Ave, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 13, 7:30 pm: Concert, "An Evening of Japanese Music," by guest artists Michael Chikuzen Gould, Kuniyasu Iwazaki, and Chieko Iwazaki performing traditional songs, with a variety of instruments, that tell aspects of Japanese history and culture.  Sponsored by many groups at Hope College, including Hope's Asian Perspective Association (HAPA, the Japan Club, the Department of Music, and the Cultural Affairs Committee.  At Nykerk Hall of Music in the center of Hope's campus between College and Columbia, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 14, 7 pm (Hope jazz group at 6:30 pm): Presentation by fiction writer Cristina Garcia, author of five novels (including "Dreaming in Cuban," "The Agüero Sisters"); editor of anthologies of Latino/a literature; and writer of works for children and a collection of poetry.  She will read from her latest book, "The Lady Matador's Hotel." She is one of the most celebrated Hispanic authors today.  Part of Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series of Hope College. Admission is free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Oct 15, and Sat, Oct 16, 7 pm until 3 am:  Event to raise awareness about recent flooding in Pakistan and to accept donations for flood victims.  Will include displays on Pakistani culture, a fashion show, dance, and music.  For reservations, call (616) 633-1600.  At Grand Valley State University, Kirkhof Center's Grand River Ballroom, Allendale.

 

Sat, Oct 16, 10 am until noon: "Viva la Vida," family event for craft activities and to learn the traditions of El Dia de los Muertos, the Mesoamerican tradition that honors the lives of loved ones who have died.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.
