Wed, Oct 13, 6 pm: Hispanic Heritage celebration event: Film, "The Undocumented Experience," in collaboration with La Raza Unida.  At Martha Miller Center, Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, 10th St at Columbia, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 13, 7 pm: GVSU documentary film, "Up From the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream": the World War II migration of African Americans from the American South to Muskegon; narrated by Cicely Tyson; soundtrack includes music from Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis. www.upfromthebottoms.com At Grand Valley's Loosemore Auditorium, DeVos Center, Pew Grand Rapids campus.

 

Wed, Oct 13, 7:30 pm: Concert, "An Evening of Japanese Music," with guest performers.  Sponsored by many Hope College groups.  At Nykerk Hall of Music in the center of Hope's campus between College and Columbia, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 14, 7 pm: Writer Cristina Garcia will read from her latest novel, "The Lady Matador's Hotel."  She is a celebrated Hispanic author of five novels, works for children, and a collection of poetry and editor of anthologies of Latino/a literature. Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Oct 15, 7 pm: "Pakistan Underwater" event to raise awareness about recent flooding in Pakistan and to accept monetary donations for flood victims ($30 provides a family of 6 with food for a month).  Speaker, cultural performances, fashion show, singers, henna application, food.  Free to the public.  Presented by Desi Student Union, with Women's Center and African Student Council.  Contact dsu@gvsu@gmail.com At Grand Valley State University, Kirkhof Center, Grand River Room, Allendale.

 

Sat, Oct 16, 10 am until noon: "Viva la Vida," family event for craft activities and to learn the traditions of El Día de los Muertos," the Mesoamerican tradition that honors loved ones who have died.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Sat, Oct 16: All day.  Online fundraiser for Justice for Our Neighbors, a ministry of the United Methodist Church to provide free immigration legal services, education and advocacy.  Grand Rapids, Holland, and Detroit are 3 of the 24 national JFON clinics.  JFON will receive $1 for each person who visits the website and registers on the 16th: www.10-fold.org

 

Tues, Oct 19, 7 pm: Candidate forum sponsored by League of Women Voters-Holland Area, with 20th Circuit Court Judge (Family Court) candidates David Rhem and Kent Engle.  At Holland City Hall council chambers, 270 South River, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 20, 7 pm: Candidate forum sponsored by League of Women Voters-Holland, with Second Congressional District candidates Fred Johnson, Democrat, and Bill Huizinga, Republican.  Cosponsored by Hope College student political groups.  At Dewitt Cultural Center on Hope's campus, Columbia Ave near 11th St, Holland.

Wed, Oct 27, 6 pm until 9 pm: El Día de los Muertos Celebration and Costume Procession.  Food, music, dance, crafts; Ballet Folklorico Sol Azteca; Frida Kahlo look-alike contest; face painting.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

ART EXHIBIT: Through November 2: El Día de los Muertos, featuring Sharon Gutowski, photographs from Mexico; Eva Narissa Martinez and Erick Pichardo, ofrendas; and Roli Mancera, wood sculpture.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

 

1) Calling All Colors needs a few more facilitators for its fall conferences at Hope College: Middle school group is Mon, Oct 18, and high schoolers meet Tues, Oct 19.  Volunteers can assist on either day, in the morning, the afternoon, or all day.  A training session is required, either in Holland on Wed, Oct 13, from 4 pm to 5:30 pm or in Grand Haven on Thurs, Oct 14, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm.  Contact Sarah Salguera at (616) 846-9074 or program@ethnicdiversity.org
