From the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony

In the Community: November 7, 2011

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.  I lift my lamp beside the golden door."  Poem by U.S. writer Emma Lazarus, inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.  The statue was dedicated 125 years ago on October 28, 1886.  The words foretold the great wave of immigrants that passed through adjacent Ellis Island, beginning in 1892.
