Tues, Dec 6, 4 pm to 5:30 pm: Display of Hope College Phelps Scholars' research posters around the theme "Creating Community Together," with students addressing topics that involve creating community across difference. Public is invited.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Dec 7, 7 pm:  Spoken Word Slam Poetry Contest: "Pizza Rhyme Rhythm N Rap."  Hope College students in the History 251, Revolutionary America, class taught by Dr. Fred L. Johnson III will vie to see "who can use the best rhyme, rhythm, and rap to send a message about the era of the American Revolution."  At Martha Miller Center Hemenway-Fried Auditorium, 10th St at Columbia Ave, Holland.

 

Sun, Dec 11, 3 pm: Japanese Worship Service for Christmas.  Message by Rev. Shunichi Miyamoto of Novi, MI; potluck meal following the service.  At Western Seminary, 101 East 13th St., Holland.

 

Tues, Dec 27, 5 pm to 8 pm:  Celebration of Kwanzaa.  At The Center of African American Art and History, 21 West 16th St, Holland.

 

 

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY 

The Center of African American Art and History (CAAAH) will hold its grand opening in Holland on January 16, 2012 (the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr), at 21 West 16th Street. The museum will feature exhibits and commemorations of history-making events; Dr. King and his life story; history of African Americans in Holland; the underground railroad; replicas of a slave ship and life on a cotton plantation; what African Americans are contributing today, and much more.
