Mon, April 7 – Fri, April 11: 27th annual Disability Awareness Week at Hope College. All events are free and open to the public, including:
--Tues, April 8, 9 am-4 pm: Visitors can simulate a variety of disabilities and gather information about hidden disabilities.  At DeWitt Center, Columbia Ave at 12th St.
--Wed, April 9, 7 pm: Speak Chris Klein of Holland, 1996 Hope graduate who was born with cerebral palsy and uses assistive technology to communicate.  At Martha Miller Center, Columbia at 10th.
--Thurs, April 10, 7 pm: Panel discussion with family members of persons with disabilities; includes experiences of parents, a child, a sibling, and a spouse.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th.
 
Thurs, April 10, 5:30 pm – 7 pm, and Fri, April 11, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm: 5th Annual Local History Roundtable: "Immigration and Civil Rights in Western Michigan."  April 10: Reception and keynote by Bing Goei of the Michigan Office for New Americans; April 11: Roundtable, panel discussions, networking sessions on oral history, grant writing, fundraising, more.  $45 for both days, plus membership in Kutsche Office of Local History; $25 for both days, but no membership; $10, Thursday only.  Register at www.gvsu.edu/kutsche Sponsored by Holland Museum, Herrick District Library, GVSU, and LAUP.  At Holland Armory, 16 West 9th St, Holland.
 
Thurs, April 10, 7 pm: "Houses of Worship" tour and discussion at Muslim Mosque.  Hosted by Kaufman Interfaith Institute of Grand Rapids to learn about the practices, traditions, and rituals of this global religion.  Free; public is welcome.  (616) 331-5702.  At 3357 East Paris Ave, Kentwood.
 
Fri, April 11, 7 pm:  General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).  Program "How Do You Know When You Belong?" by Alan Headbloom, cross-cultural communication consultant and host of the Grand Rapids TV show, "Feel Like You Belong."  Includes 20-minute broadcast segment and discussion of what he has learned in interviewing and interacting with immigrants. Thurs, April 17, 5:30 pm (reception), 6 pm (program): ACLU of Michigan Western Branch Annual Meeting and Civil Libertarian of the Year Award.  ACLU executive director Kary Moss will speak on current state of civil liberties in West Michigan; award will be given to Mary Alice Williams, executive director of the Nokomis Foundation, who has worked in community organizing, women's studies, and protection of voting rights and community mental health recipient rights.  Free and open to the public. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers needed.  This program of Pathways Mi in Holland provides trained volunteers who are appointed by the Ottawa County Family Court "to advocate, in a timely manner, for safe, permanent homes for children involved in neglect and abuse court proceedings."  Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, attend 30 hours of training, and commit to visiting the child or children twice a month, and write quarterly reports to the court.  Applications are being accepted until April 15 for training in June/July.  For more information or an application, contact Sheryl Brink, CASA Coordinator, at sbrink@pathwaysmi.org

Hope College Upward Bound Program:  Part-time positions (10-20 hours/week) from June 17-July 26 for teachers with secondary education certificates who are able to teach anatomy/physiology, biology, chemistry, English, math, or physics to high school students from diverse backgrounds.  For requirements and more details, go to www.hope.edu/employment and look under Staff.  Deadline is Friday, April 11.
