Members and friends work together through programs, outreach, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. The Big Read Holland Area joins with Hispanic Heritage Month collaborative to present a documentary of "memoirs from two siblings examining the Latino experience during a war that placed the heaviest burden on working-class youth." Mon, Oct 12, 7 pm: Candidate Forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Holland Area. Candidates for the contested races of Holland mayor, council person at large, and 4th Ward council person will be present. At Holland City Hall Council Chambers, 270 South River, Holland.
Wed, Oct 14, 5:30 pm-7 pm: #RacisminGR Community Conversation, Part III. Free event for people to discuss, in a safe space, experiences with racism, bias, and inequity in Grand Rapids. Video of a speeh given in April by author and pastor Wendy VanderWal Gritter to students and friends of Calvin College. She tells the story of Kathy, a traditional Christian who works in a Christian organization and discovers she is a lesbian: "Can she be lesbian and still Christian? Can she come out of her closet? Keynote speaker is Kevin Boyle, author of the award-winning book "Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age," the true story of a black doctor, Dr. Ossian Sweet, as he and his family move into a white neighborhoods in 1920s Detroit. Escape Ministries: Volunteers for this Holland program that works to "inspire, equip, and empower at-risk teens and young adults." Needed: mentors for middle and high school students; help with youth athletic programs; assistance with food pantry distribution; administrative support. Screening for Breast Cancer: Holland Hospital has a Komen Foundation grant to cover the cost of mammograms and ultrasounds for Ottawa County women struggling to afford such tests.
