TONIGHT, Mon, Sept 21, 7 pm:  Tulipanes film: "¡Que Viva Mexico!"  90-minute silent flm by Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein.  Sones de Mexico will present a live score for the film.  Free.  At Dewitt Auditorium, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
 
 
Thurs, Sept 24, and Fri, Sept 25, 9 am to 4 pm:  Restorative Circle Facilitator Training. Learn to communicate and collaborate in times of conflict and how to facilitate a formal restorative circle. Thurs, Oct 8, 7:30 pm (doors open 7 pm): "On Two Fronts: Latinos and Vietnam."  The Big Read Holland Area joins with Hispanic Heritage Month collaborative to present a documentary of "memoirs from two siblings examining the Latino experience during a war that placed the heaviest burden on working-class youth."  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th, Holland.
 
Tues, Oct 20, 5:30 pm:  Disability Network/Lakeshore "The Ability Award" event honoring those who "persist in the vision of communities where people with disabilities can participate, contribute, and belong."  Keynote address by Lt. Thurs, Oct 22, 8:30am – 10 am: 9th annual Lakeshore Friends of Fair Housing Breakfast. Opening Doors to Housing Choice.  Keynote speaker is Kevin Boyle, author of the award-winning book "Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age," the true story of a black doctor, Dr. Ossian Sweet, as he and his family move into a white neighborhoods in 1920s Detroit.  Register for the event at www.fhcwm.org   At Double Tree Hotel, 650 East 24th St, Holland.
 
Community Opportunities
Nuestra Comunidad Hispana.  An invitation to Hispanic Americans to record their stories as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.  Facilitators available to help the story teller in Spanish or English; stories will be displayed at LAUP annual dinner and other sites; participants will receive a copy of their photograph and story.  At Herrick District Library, 270 S. Beginner's Conversational Spanish I Course:  Registration is open for this weekly course (3 pm to 5 pm, Tues, Oct 6,  to Tues, Dec. 15) offered by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance at Macatawa Resource Center, 665 136th Ave, Door #2, Holland.  Go to http://www.ethnicdiversity.org/getinvolved  for a registration form.
 
Escape Ministries:  Volunteers for this Holland program that works to  "inspire, equip, and empower at-risk teens and young adults." Needed: mentors for middle and high school students; help with youth athletic programs; assistance with food pantry distribution; administrative support.  For more information, go to www.escape-out.org
 
Screening for Breast Cancer:  Holland Hospital has a Komen Foundation grant to cover the cost of  mammograms and ultrasounds for Ottawa County women struggling to afford such tests.
