Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities: Monday, January 18
8:30 am until noon: Day of Service at Maple Avenue Ministries.  Opportunity for volunteers to                                           assembly hygiene kits for the homeless and distribute them to local agencies.  At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple Ave, Holland.
 
9:30 am to 10:30 am, or 11 am to noon:  Martin Luther King Jr event for elementary students: "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House," based on curriculum developed by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center.  Receive free book, bookmark, and snacks.  hrc@cityofholland.com or (616) 355-1328; leave name, number of students, and phone number. 11:30 am: 30th annual Commemoration Program and Community Peace March.  At Grand Rapids Community College, Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse, Grand Rapids.
 
1 pm to 3 pm: Visual Art Presentation on Contemporary African American Artists, featuring Nick Cave and Kehinde Wiley.  Program includes an art project for students ages 8 and up. Also touched on: African American artists of the past, including Jean Michael Basquiat, The Gees Bend quilters, and Highwaymen artists of Florida.  Free.  Presented by City of Holland and Holland Area Arts Council.  At Holland City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.
 
 2 pm to 5 pm:  Documentary films: "Black History: A Retrospective," followed by panel discussion.  MLK Day of Service hosted by African American Awareness and Development Organization (AAADO).  Refreshments.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.
 
4:30 pm to 6:30 pm:  Soul Food Fest.  Hosted by Office of Multicultural Education and Hope Dining Services.  $6 for community members.  At Phelps Dining Hall, 10th St and Columbia Ave, Holland.
 
 7 pm: Annual Martin Luther King Jr., Civil Rights Lecture. Keynote speaker is Hope College graduate David A. Paul. His lecture, "Dare to be BOLD," will examine King's early life and career and "what causes a man to aggressively fight against injustice," with focus on King's courage to lead despite threats to his life.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.
 
7 pm: MLK at the Movies.  Conversation around the experiences of young people and their encounters with racism based on the movie "DOPE."  Free.  Presented by Partners for a Racism-Free Community, West Michigan AmeriCorps Collaborative, and Celebration! Cinema.  At Celebration! Cinema, 2121 Celebration Dr NE, Grand Rapids.

Wed, Jan 20, 7 pm:  2015 Social Justice Award presentation by City of Holland Human Relations Commission.  At City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.
 
Wed, Jan 20 (10 am-noon); Fri, Jan 22 (2 pm-4 pm), or Mon, Jan 25 (3 pm-5 pm): Asian and Asian Pacific Island residents, and Asian and Asian Pacific Island Americans, are invited to share their stories and be photographed at one of these free story collection events.  Trained facilitators available to help story-tellers; participants receive a copy of their recorded story and a professional photograph.  For information, call (616) 355-3721 or email reference@herrickdl.org  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River Ave, Holland.

Tues, Jan 26, 6:30 pm: "Beyond Hate and Fear: Immigration and the Refugee Crisis in America."  Four panelists, discussion of "ensuring that due process and equal protection under the Constitution are guaranteed to every person, regardless of immigration status."  Hosted by ACLU of Michigan.  At Loosemore Auditorium, GVSU downtown campus, West 401 Fulton St, Grand Rapids.
 
Community Opportunity
Restorative Circles Facilitator Training, Feb 4 and 5, 9 am to 4 pm: Learn how to communicate during times of conflict or around different points of view, in communities, families, workplaces, congregations.  Gain skills that can be put in practice immediately in informal ways and also learn how to facilitate a formal restorative circle.  For info and to register: https://hrcircles.wordpress.com/

Looking Ahead
Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH):  Friday, Feb. 5, 5 pm:  "A Heart to Heart Community Celebration" potluck and cultural sharing party with music, activities, delicious food, silent auction, more.  Everyone is welcome!   Please plan to bring a dish from your cultural heritage and a nonperishable food item for a local food bank.  (616) 886-4758 or (616) 396-2201. Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35 for two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50 for two years; $40 annually for a nonprofit; and $75 per year for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, contributing volunteer time to the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.
