 Mon, March 28, 7 pm: Play, "Lines: The Lived Experience of Race 2016."  90-minute production by the ADAPT Theatre Company tells "the actual stories of individuals and families in Grand Rapids whose housing, employment, and education have been affected by 'red lining'—both officially mandated and subtly instituted by you and me; challenges us to consider issues so we might better respond to peace-related divisions in West Michigan."  Written and directed by Stephanie Sandberg. Other performances: Wed, March 30, 7 pm; Thurs, March 31, noon (free); Friday, April 1, 7 pm (pay-what-you-can performance); Sat, April 2, 2 pm and 7 pm; Sun, April 3, 2 pm.  Thurs, March 31, 4:45 pm to 7 pm:  Food Festival, hosted by Hope College as part of César Chávez celebration and in honor of Alfredo Gonzáles. $6 for community members, payable at door.  At Phelps Dining Hall, 10th St at Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Sat, April 2, 7 pm: Film, "Poverty, Inc." examines "the rise of charity as a multibillion dollar poverty industry, through real-world case studies."  Produced by the Acton Institute; hosted and co-sponsored by a number of Hope College organizations.  Panel and discussion with audience follows 90-minute film.  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Mon, Apr 4 – Sat, Apr 9, 7:30 pm:  Film, "Race," based on the story of Jesse Owens, whose quest "to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy."  "An enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship; an inspiring drama about one man's fight to become an Olympic legend."  Rated PG-13; 130 minutes.  $7 adults, $6 seniors.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 Wed, Apr 6, 7 pm:  "Does Race Matter?"  Third in series, presented by award-winning poet, playwright, and professor of English Claudia Rankine; copies of her book "Citizen: An American Lyric" are available at Herrick Library.  Discussion follows. Hosted by city of Holland, Herrick District Library, and GVSU.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 Community Opportunity

4-H Cultural Competency series:   Would you enjoy sharing something from your family's heritage with elementary-age youth? 4-H and Herrick District Library are  looking for adults and older teens to help children learn more about aspects of different cultures (food, music, art, holidays, dances, or traditional dress/clothing).  No need for you to teach about all of these—just whichever one or ones that you'd like to talk about or demonstrate with the children.  Meetings will be Thursday afternoons in June or July.  Please contact Susan at (616) 994-4543 or fentons@msu.edu

Mothering Justice Movement Fellowship:  7-month fellowship with $1,500 stipend; sponsored by Mothering Justice, a statewide organization "dedicated to empowering mothers to influence policy on behalf of themselves and their families through advocacy, leadership development, voter empowerment, and promoting family-friendly advocacy."  Conduct community meetings, phone banking, collecting stories, training volunteers, canvassing, with half-day trainings once a month.
