 Mon, April 4, 7 pm: "From Malaysia to Michigan: A Community Reception," by Holland native and Fulbright grantee Sophie Boudreau, who spent a year teaching in Malaysia; two of her students will be present.  Free.  www.hollandmuseum.org  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

 Mon, April 4 – Sat, Apr 9, 7:30 pm:  Film, "Race," based on the story of Jesse Owens, whose seeks "to become the greatest track and field athlete in history ...in the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy."  PG-13; 130 minutes.  $7 adults, $6 seniors.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

            

Tues, April 5, 7 pm: Film, "Jackie Robinson"; the story of "his rise from humble origins to integrate Major League Baseball...despite threats and abuse he faces on and off the field...After his baseball career he seeks to fight inequality and remain relevant while coping with a crippling illness."  Free preview screening; short discussion follows.  Presented by WGVU and PBS.  At Celebration! Cinema Grand Rapids North and IMAX, 2121 Celebration Drive Northeast, Grand Rapids.

Wed, Apri 6, 7 pm:  "Does Race Matter?"  Third in series, by award-winning poet, playwright, and professor of English Claudia Rankine; copies of her book "Citizen: An American Lyric" are available at Herrick Library.  Discussion follows. Hosted by city of Holland, Herrick District Library, and GVSU.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 Fri, April 9, and Sat, April 9, 7 pm: Film, "Documented," by Jose-Antonio Vargas, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker, who came to the US from the Philippines at age 12 and who is undocumented.  Facilitated by Dr. Charles Green and Prof. Rodrigo DeGrau Amaya. $2; funds donated to "Blessing Not a Burden." Sponsored by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and student groups.  At Room 102, Vanderwerf Hall, 27 Graves Place (between 10th and 11th Sts and Central and College Aves), Holland.

 Sat, April 9, 8 am-5 pm:  23rd annual Dia de La Mujer Conference: "Solidarity for Change: Using our Voice to Inspire Action."  Speaker Christine Chavez; workshops on education, health, legal, STEM, finance/ business, relationships, and self-empowerment "to motivate and inspire Latinas."  $50 general, $15 students; onsite, $50 general, $25 students. http://ddlm.ocat.msu.edu  At Michigan State University Kellogg Center, 55 South Harrison Rd, East Lansing.

 Community Opportunity

4-H Cultural Competency series:   Would you enjoy sharing something from your family's heritage with elementary-age youth? 4-H and Herrick District Library are  looking for adults and older teens to help children learn more about aspects of different cultures (food, music, art, holidays, dances, or traditional dress/clothing)--whichever one or ones that you'd like to talk about or demonstrate with the children.  Meets Thursday afternoons in June or July.  Contact Susan at (616) 994-4543 or fentons@msu.edu

 Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35 for two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50 for two years; $40 annually for a nonprofit; and $75 per year for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, contributing volunteer time to the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.
