 Sat, Aug 13, 3 pm:  Community Unconferenced Dialogue to discuss recent killings of African Americans in the U.S.; other issues. Panelists will include Esther Fifelski, Holland Human Relations Commission director; Sgt. Larry Matzen, Holland community policing unit supervisor; Pastor Denise Kingdom-Grier of Maple Avenue Ministries; attorney Abe Gonzalez; and educator Lindsay Cherry.  Breakout sessions for group discussions; bring stories and concerns.  Open to the public; everyone is welcome.  Hosted by the African American Awareness & Development Organization (AAADO).  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 Sun, August 14, 1 pm to 4 pm:  18th annual Potluck in the Park hosted by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) to celebrate the diversity of our community.  Bring a dish to share from your culture, and a lawn chair or blanket for extra seating. ACEH provides beverages and table service.

 Come enjoy music, activities for all ages, pie-eating contest, musical tiles, balloons, face painting, arts and crafts, prizes, and more.  Invite family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, people who are new to West Michigan.  Everyone is welcome! Info at 396-3751 or www.harmonyalliance.org

Community Opportunity

Citizen's Police Academy, Sept 12 – Nov 21, Monday evenings 6 pm to 9 pm: Free, open to people age 17 and older who live or work in the greater Holland area; must have no serious criminal record.  In an effort to educate the public about police policies and procedures, the Academy seeks "to dispel myths, suspicions, and misconceptions about law enforcement in Holland."  Class size is about 40 people. Managed by Community Policing Unit, with presentations that include OWI (operating while impaired) investigations; tours of department, county jail, and 911 Center; probation programs; K-9 unit; narcotics enforcement; use of force; domestic violence law; gang and anti-drug enforcement; judicial syste;, traffic and patrol procedures; city ordinances and state laws; ride-a-long with an officer for a shift; firearms use and training.  Application forms available in the lobby of the HDPS (89 West 8th St, Holland) or online.

 Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years); $40 for a nonprofit; and $75 for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.
