You tell us often that these weekly emails are valuable to you, helping you find out what's happening around diversity, race, justice, and inclusion issues in this area. We know you attend events or sign up for workshops and classes because you've read about them here. We're glad to partner with local organizations to publicize what they are doing. People have told us they appreciate the job leads. Many of you are already members, and contributors to ACEH, and we appreciate you!
In 2017, we hope that more of you will support what we do in West Michigan. Please consider stepping up to become a member of ACEH and help us continue publishing "In the Community" and our monthly Newsletter, hosting community events, and funding a local scholarship. Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years); $40 for a nonprofit; and $75 for a business. In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization.

Mon, Jan 16, 9 am until noon: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day: Maple Avenue Ministries Community Project to Help Flint, MI Seniors: Assembling "Hope" packages for senior citizens in the city of Flint, including bottled water and hygiene and health items. Donations of gallons or cases of water are needed.
---1 pm to 3 pm: Children's MLK activities with author Antoinette Lawrence.

Mon, Jan 16, 7 pm: 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture. "Dismantling Injustice: Creating a New Legacy for a Better Future," by Hope College alumnus Julian Hinson, a medical students at Meharry Medical College, Nashville TN. Open to the public. Free. At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.
Tues, Jan 17, 6:30 pm: Allies Working for Social Justice and Environmental Progress. Finalize strategies from December meeting and plan for action to implement goals. If planning to attend, register by accessing www.ethnicdiversity.org and following prompts to this event. At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 S. River, Holland.
Wed, Jan 18, 6:30 pm to 8 pm: First meeting of 10-session citizenship class. Free. Students will prepare for U.S. citizenship test and receive help with filling out the N-400 Application for Naturalization. After the 10 classes are over, students will have the option to attend a legal clinic with immigration attorneys for a $30 fee. Wed. Jan 18, 7 pm: City of Holland Social Justice Awards and "I Have a Dream" Essay Contest. Announcement of winners and presentation of awards by Holland's Human Relations Commission. Reception follows. Open to the public. At City Hall, 270 South River, Holland.
Thurs, Jan 19, 4 pm: Diversity in the Workplace. Panelists from business, health care, and government offices speak about their careers. Hosted by Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion. At Maas Center Conference Room, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Fri, Jan 20, 7 pm support group; 8:10 pm program: PFLAG meeting. Includes brief quiz about famous people from the LGBT community and viewing of a DVD ("Living with Pride: Ruth Ellis@100"), about the oldest known African American lesbian. Trans group meets from 6 to 7 pm. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
Sun, Jan 22, 9:40 am: Holland Equity Alliance. Presentation by Andrea Mehall on work being done surrounding racial justice in Holland, primarily in Holland Public Schools. Part of the Reconciliation Adult Education Series; open to everyone. At Hope Church RCA, 77 West 11th St, Holland.
Wed, Jan 25, 11 am – 1 pm: "Coffee with a Cop." Meet local police officers and engage in conversation with them over coffee; an opportunity for the officers and community members to get to know each other. Hosted by Herrick District Library. At the library, 300 South River, Holland.
Friday, Jan 27, 6 pm to 8 pm: "Be the Bridge" launch with Latasha Morrison and panelists. Event to encourage racial unity and to welcome "diversity and healing into our communities." Community Opportunities
Kids Talk Justice! Local author Lisa Van Engen is looking for youth ages 3 to 18 to be part of a book she's under contract to write, about kids and justice issues. Their answers to short surveys will be included as sidebars in the book. Lisa has led summer playgroups on justice topics and offered an activity at an ACEH summer Potluck in the Park. Email her at lisavanengen@gmail.com or call (616) 283-0036 for a copy of the PDF (one for elementary students and teens and one for young kids). She would like surveys returned by Feb. 1.
Restorative Circle Facilitator Training, Feb 2 and 3, 9 am to 4 pm: Learn how to communicate and collaborate during times of conflict or different points of view; develop skills to put into practice in informal ways and also learn how to facilitate a formal restorative circle as well. $150 (financial assistance may be available if needed). Sat, Feb 4, 2017, 5 pm: Annual Heart 2 Heart Community Celebration. A Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party, hosted by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH). Music, performances, silent auction, family activities, fabulous food, fun, fellowship. Everyone is welcome! At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.
