Mon, Feb 20, 6 pm: "Identifying Hidden Obstacles in Holland, Michigan: Protecting the equal rights and opportunities of all citizens." First in the 2017 series of Community S.A.F.E. (Support & Advocacy For Everyone) Conversations hosted by the Holland Human Relations Commission. Facilitated by Commissioners Dr. Vicki-Lynn Holmes, Jennifer White, and Bree Austin-Roberts. Free; everyone is welcome. At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.
Tues, Feb 21, 4 pm: 2017 Black History Lecture: Legacies of Excellence. Presentation by Dr. Lynn Wooten, Univ. Mich. Ross School of Business "examines positive impact that African American people and communities have had in the U.S. and the world, including education, business, medicine, and politics." Free, open to the public. At Hope College Maas Auditorium, 264 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Tues, Feb 21, 5 pm: "Travel from the 1800s through the Present with Black History." Presented by C.J. Kingdom-Grier. At Boys & Girls Club, 18th St at Van Raalte, Holland.
Sun, March 5, 3 pm: "Midnight at the Black History Museum." Performed by Maple Avenue Ministries 4C Central City Children's Choir and directed by Chris C.J. Kingdom Grier: "Students get locked in the museum after a field trip, and portraits of famous African Americans come alive 'to educate them on their past and open their eyes to very important moments in history.'" Desserts follow. Free, open to all. At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple Ave, Holland.
Tues, March 14, 11 am to 1:30 pm: Ladles of Love: soups, sides, & silent auction. Benefit for My House Ministry. Proceeds will fund resident case management to help carry out the My House mission of "providing hope, housing, and guidance to women and children in need." Now through March 3: Contemporary Native Voices. Highlights works of Native Great Lakes artists "whose works reflect their cultural heritage and reach beyond the boundaries of tradition." The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area awards $575,000 in scholarships each year for students to attend schools of higher education.
