Mon, Feb 6, 1 pm: Great Decisions: Rx: Prescription for Latin America. Presented by Jason Beaubien, Global Health and Development Correspondent, NPR. At Hope College, Graves Hall, Winants Auditorium, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Mon, Feb 6, 6:30 – 8:30 pm: Film, "The Lost Boys of Sudan," followed by discussion with former Sudanese refugees Rebecca Deng and Deng Jongkurch about the journeys that brought them to West Michigan, and their experiences here. Presented by Holland International Relations Commission in collaboration with Herrick District Library. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.
Tues, Feb 7, 3 pm: "The Path Ahead for Refugees and Immigrants." A basic overview of refugee, asylum, and immigration law and the refugee process in light of the recent executive order by the U.S. president, presented by Elly Jordan, Adjunct Professor of Refugee & Asylum Law and a supervising attorney in the Immigration Law Clinic at the MSU College of Law; she is an alumna of Hope College. Question and answer period will follow. At Maas Auditorium, Hope College, 264 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Thurs, Feb 9 - Sat, Feb 11: French Film Festival. Films on Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights at 7:30 pm and on also Sat at 3 pm. All except Saturday night are at the Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th, Holland. Saturday night film is at Graves Hall, Winants Auditorium, College Ave at 11th St, Holland. Exhibits
Now through Thurs, Feb. 9: Between the Shadow & the Light: An Exhibition out of South Africa. 40 works in a variety of media, by 21 Christian artists from the U.S., Canada, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa "who explore social, economic, and political complexities in the region." At De Pree Gallery, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Now through March 3: Contemporary Native Voices. Highlights works of Native Great Lakes artists "whose works reflect their cultural heritage and reach beyond the boundaries of tradition." Pieces from the collections of GVSU and Michigan State. Open every day, varying hours. Artists' reception, Thurs, Feb 2, 6 to 8 pm. At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.
The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area awards $575,000 in scholarships each year for students to attend schools of higher education. It manages more than 85 different funds, awarding more than 230 scholarships. Each has unique criteria. Unless noted otherwise, students must use the Foundation's general online scholarship application, which is due at 5 pm on March 1.
