ACEH was founded in Holland in 1999 and is committed to justice, equal opportunity, cross-cultural understanding, and appreciation for diversity. Members work together to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. Sat, Feb 25, 6 pm to 8 pm: International Food Fair. Foods prepared by Hope College international students; tables of food samples will also feature displays about the cuisine and the country's culture. $5 for five tickets, additional tickets 50 cents; most foods cost one or two tickets. Funds raised will help install a water filter in a village near Holland's sister city, Querétaro, Mexico. At Maas Center, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Mon, Feb 27, 10 am to noon: Immigrant Rights Presentation, with attorneys Susan Reed of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and Sarah Yore-Van Oosterhout of Lighthouse Immigration Advocates, and Martha Gonzalez-Cortes, community relations director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Organized by LEDA and Allies Immigration Policy Group. At St. Francis de Sales Church, lower level multipurpose room, 13th St and Maple Ave, Holland.
Tues, Feb 28, 6 pm: Nuestra Comunidad Hispana opening reception. An exhibit of over 50 stories and photographs of Holland-area Latino/a residents; includes stories from first- , second- , and third-generation individuals from several countries. Free, open to the public. Developed by partnership of LAUP, Herrick District Library, GVSU, the city of Holland, and the Holland Museum. At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 S. River, Holland.
Tues, Feb 28, 6:30 pm: PBS documentary: "Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise." Screening and community conversation, hosted by LEDA and WGVU Engage Inclusion. At Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Ave, Grand Haven.
Tues, March 2, 7 pm: Documentary: "Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think." Explores opinions of Muslims around the world on such issues as gender justice, terrorism, and democracy as reflected in interviews with residents in 35 predominantly Muslim nations as well as smaller populations in Europe and the U.S. Discussion led by Dr. Nazir Harb Michel of Georgetown University's Bridge Initiative on the study of Islamophobia. At Hope College Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Thurs, March 2, 7 pm: Documentary "The EÑYE Experience." "Explores experience of first-generation, American-born Latin@s living in the U.S., believing that their existence between two cultures is distinctive." Followed by discussion with the filmmakers and Latino/a leaders from Ottawa County. Fri, March 3, 4 pm: Keynote address "Terrorism, Islamophobia, and a Billion Muslims Caught in the Middle: Reflections on Islam in America in a Time of Fear," by Dr. Nazir Harb Michel of Georgetown University, analyzing national debates about refugees, immigration, freedom of religion, and security, and probing the question "Can you be a good neighbor to the many Muslims living in and near Holland, or should you be wary?" Followed by Q&A session. At Hope College, Room 102 VanderWerf Hall, 27 Graves Place (11th St between College and Central Aves, Holland).
Sun, March 5, 3 pm: "Midnight at the Black History Museum." Performed by Maple Avenue Ministries 4C Central City Children's Choir and directed by Chris C.J. Kingdom Grier: "Students get locked in the museum after a field trip, and portraits of famous African Americans come alive 'to educate them on their past and open their eyes to very important moments in history.'" Desserts follow. Free, open to all. At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple Ave, Holland.
Tues, March 14, 11 am to 1:30 pm: Ladles of Love: soups, sides, & silent auction. Benefit for My House Ministry. Proceeds will fund resident case management to help carry out the My House mission of "providing hope, housing, and guidance to women and children in need." Scholarships
The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area awards $575,000 in scholarships each year for students to attend schools of higher education. Unless noted otherwise, students must use the Foundation's general online scholarship application, due at 5 pm on March 1.
