 Dear Readers of "In the Community":

 Many of you are financial supporters of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, and you are deeply appreciated.  We're asking if others of you who read, use, forward, or otherwise benefit from this weekly email will also become members of ACEH.  Your dues are needed to help pay for "In the Community," our monthly Newsletter, educational programs, partnerships with other groups, outreach and advocacy, and community social events twice a year.

 It's easy to join!  Here's how:

--Or you can write a check to ACEH, c/o Treasurer Al Minert, Box 3007, Holland, MI 49422-3007;

--Or you can join at any ACEH program or social event.

  Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years); $40 for a nonprofit; and $75 for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.  The fiscal year is October 1 – September 30.

Mon, Oct 16, 6:30 pm:  "Stand Up: Protect the Vote" public forum of the Holland League of Women Voters, co-sponsored by ACEH, LAUP, LEDA, HRC and IRC, on voting rights, suppression of the vote, and strategies to preserve the vote.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland(ACEH will not have a separate general meeting this month.)

 Wed, Oct 18, 6 pm:  Raise the Age Michigan campaign. Discussion: Should 17-year-olds be sent to adult prisons?  Hosted by American Civil Liberties Union, Michigan Council on Crime & Delinquency, Michigan League for Public Policy. At Herrick Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Thurs, Oct 19, 5:30 – 8 pm: 13th annual Cesar E. Chavez Gala.  Presentation of Hispanic Excellence Scholarship and Community Awards.  Speaker, entertainment.  Tickets $100.  RSVP by October 6 at www.gvsu.edu/inclusion/17cecgala  At GVSU L.V.  Friday, Oct 20, 7 pm:  PFLAG meeting: The Rev. Dan Furman, senior pastor of Hudsonville United Church of Christ, will describe the journey of his congregation to become an Open and Affirming church.  He is also board chair of Out On The Lakeshore.  Gender SAFE (Supporting All For Equality) meets 6 to 7 pm.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 Fri, Oct 20, 7:30 pm:  Concert: Sphinx Virtuosi, professional chamber orchestra with 18 of the nation's top Black and Latino classical soloists, alumni of renowned Sphinx Competition.  The organization "… helps to increase the number of Black and Latino members in American orchestras through education, community outreach in schools, summer music camp, and more."  $22 adults, $16 seniors, $6 ages 18 and under; buy online at www.hope.edu/tickets or call (616) 395-7890.  Part of Great Performance Series.  Sat, Oct 21, 9 am  to 4:30 pm:  2017 West Side Immigrant and Refugee Rights Summit.  Focuses on challenges immigrants and refugees face, available resources, strategies for making West Michigan more welcoming.  Sat, Oct 21, 2 pm:  Observance of 200th anniversary of birth of Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith.  Teachings of this spiritual leader formed the basis of a process of social transformation and community building "unique in global scope and diversity of participants."  Event includes devotions, music and video presentations, refreshments.  Sat, Oct 21, 2 pm to 4 pm: Know Your Muslim Neighbor Open House.  Hosted by Grand Rapids Islamic Masjid and Religious Institute (Masjid At-Tawheed Mosque).  Public is invited to tour prayer hall; ask questions about the Quran; ask questions to a Muslim refugee, teen, woman; try a hijab; write your name in Arabic; get a henna tattoo; try food and drinks from several Muslim countries.  At Masjid At-Tawheed, 3357 East Paris, Kentwood, MI

 Sat, Oct 21, 5:30–7:30 pm:  Fundraiser for My House Ministries: "The Sweetest Thing" Dessert Competition.  Community Opportunities

Ottawa County CASA:  CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers are needed to advocate for Ottawa County's abused and neglected children.  Volunteers are screened, trained, and assigned to one family of children at a time while the children are wards of Family Court; the volunteers' role is to investigate, advocate, facilitate, monitor, and report to the court.  Email avenard@arborcircle.org for information and an application.
