TODAY, Fri, Oct 27, 6 pm to 7 pm: Day of the Dead celebration. Hosted by Hope College Latino Student Organization and Kruizenga Art Museum. At Kruizenga Art Museum, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Sun, Oct 29, 1 pm-4:30 pm: Día de los Muertos Family Day. Day of the Dead altars on display (Oct 28 - Nov 1), live music by Gabriel Estrada III, decorate sugar skulls, face painting, other activities. Light refreshments. Sponsored by GR Public Library Foundation. At Grand Rapids Public Library (main library), 111 Library St, NE, Grand Rapids.
Sun, Oct 29, 5 pm: Reformation 500: Protestants and Catholics will gather for "A Celebration of Christian Unity." Speaker, Dr. John Witvliet, St. Francis de Sales Brass, massed choir from local congregations. Presider, Rev. Marvin Hoffman. At Christ Memorial Church, Graafschap Rd and 24th St, Holland.
Tues, Oct 31, 11 am-12:30 pm: March and Rally to support the D.A.C.A. (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program. Organized by Hope College students to raise awareness of immigration issues and advocate for reform and a clean DREAM Act. The March will go from Pine Grove in the center of campus to Holland City Hall, where a student and community leaders will speak. Everyone is welcome.
Wed, Nov 1, 7 pm: The Big Read Kick-Off Event. TED-talk styled evening to put this year's book selection, "When the Emperor Was Divine," into context; with Amy Otis-De Grau, Dr. Wayne Tan, and Dr. Jeanne Petit. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.
Wed, Nov 1, 7 pm: "Muste in Michigan": Four Hope College alumni discuss "Muste's Michigan and Reformed Church background, his checkered relationship with the college, and his legacy." Videographer David Schock will talk about his documentary film "Radical for Peace." Hope alumnus A.J. Muste was an internationally known advocate for peace and justice; he died in 1967. At Graves Hall, 263 College Ave, Holland.
Wed, Nov 2, 5 pm-9 pm: 4th annual Civil Discourse Symposium: "Immigrants and Refugees: Celebrating Our Diversity." Jack Mangala, Padnos/Sarosik Endowed Professor, will moderate panel of speakers, along with Alan Headbloom, host of TV program "Feel Like You Belong." A light dinner will start at 5 pm. In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. The fiscal year is October 1 – September 30.
