Many of you support us with your dues, which help finance our programs, publications, partnerships, advocacy on current issues, two scholarships, and community social events, and we appreciate you very much. In this comedy-drama, a family in China arranges an impromptu wedding to gather before their beloved grandmother dies, keeping the truth of her condition from her; a granddaughter struggles with the decision. Program on human trafficking, by Stacey Sills, health consultant, OAISD, and chair, Ottawa Allegan Human Trafficking Task Force. Gender SAFE (Supporting All for Equality) meets 6 to 8 pm at Grace Episcopal; also meets first Saturday of the month at OOTL, 451 Columbus Ave, Holland. Sat, Sept 21, noon to 1 pm: "Stand for Peace." Local commemoration of the International Day of Peace, by Lakeshore Women for Peace. Materials & instruction available to make peace signs (or choose premade one) and for children to make peace cranes. Bring chair if you wish to "sit for peace." Sat, Sept 21, 6 pm-9 pm: Nocha en la Armería/Night at the Armory. Adults only. At 6 pm: Come early to "claim a seat, spin our prize wheel, and grab a snack (palomitas, pan, café, y chocolate)." 7 pm: Showing of film Como agua para chocolate/Like water for chocolate. Mon, Sept 23, 3 pm: "Life & Death on the Border": Aid worker with No More Deaths, speaker Scott Warren is principal defendant in a felony trial for his work to mitigate death in Arizona desert land corridor where migrants cross US/Mexico border. A June 2019 jury was unable to find him guilty of "human smuggling and conspiracy to harbor." At the behest of the federal government, he will be retried in November on the same charges and could face years in prison. Hosted by Hope College programs, including Border Studies partnership. Mon, Sept 30 – Sat, Oct 5, 7:30 pm: Film, "Toni Morrison, The Pieces I Am." Examines writer Morrison's life, works, and powerful themes she confronted throughout her literary career. Morrison, who died in August, won Nobel Prize in Literature, Pulitzer Prize, and many other literary prizes and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Film, released just before her death, is said to "capture the larger-than-life author in exceedingly human terms." Rated PG-13. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.
Wed, Oct 2, 7 pm: Faith, Race, and Community Lecture Series: "Getting Race Right: How Did We End Up Here? What, Exactly, Is Going On? Where is the Church, Anyway? And What Can We Do Now?" Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years);
$30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years);
$40 for a nonprofit; $75 for a business.
In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. Our fiscal year is October 1 to September 30.
