 Mon, Sept 30, 1:30 pm:  2019 Stoutemire Lecture in Multicultural Ministry: "Faith Following Ferguson: Five Years Later," by Dr. Leah Gunning Francis, author of "Ferguson and Faith." At Mulder Chapel, Western Theological Seminary, 101 E. 13th St, Holland.

 Mon, Sept 30, 7 pm:  Mayoral Candidate Forum: Hosted by League of Women Voters of the Holland Area to hear views of candidates running for mayor of Holland: Nancy DeBoer and  Nathan Bocks.  Written questions accepted from audience.  At Holland City Hall, 270 S. River.

 Mon, Sept 30, 7 pm: "Building Peace and Reconciliation in Israel and Palestine": Address by Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek, Palestinian/Christian theologian, author, and a citizen of Israel. At First Congregational Church, 345 W. Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo.

Mon, Sept 30 – Sat, Oct 5, 7:30 pm:  Film, "Toni Morrison, The Pieces I Am."  Examines writer Morrison's life, works, and powerful themes she confronted throughout her literary career.  Morrison, who died in August, won the Nobel Prize in Literature, Pulitzer Prize, and many other literary prizes and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Film, released just before her death, is said to "capture the larger-than-life author in exceedingly human terms."  Rated PG-13.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 Wed, Oct 2, 7 pm:  Faith, Race, and Community Lecture Series: "Getting Race Right: How Did We End Up Here?  What, Exactly, Is Going On?  Where is the Church, Anyway? And What Can We Do Now?"  Speaker is Dr. Charles Green; lecture will be followed by a panel question-and-answer session.  Hosted by Hope College American Ethnic Studies and Phelps Scholars Program.  At Maas Auditorium, 264 Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Fri, Oct 4, noon to 1:30 pm: Lakeshore Housing Alliance annual meeting.  Free, open to the public.  At Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, main conference room, 12220 Fillmore, West Olive.

 Sat, Oct 5:  Little and Big Read Book Giveaway:  Area public libraries will have a limited supply of free copies of the books for pre-K through third grade children and for middle schoolers ("The Rooster Who Would Not be Quiet!" and "Before We Were Free") and for high school students and adults ("In the Time of Butterflies") in this year's Community Little and Big Read program.  Participating are Allegan, Allendale, Fennville, Jamestown Gary Byker), Holland (Herrick main and north side), Zeeland (Howard Miller), Grand Haven (Loutit), Hudsonville (Patmos), Saugatuck-Douglas, and Spring Lake.

 Mon, Oct 7, 7 pm:  Candidate forum for Saugatuck City Council.  Six candidates are competing for three seats: Christine Peterson, Garnet Lewis, Gerald Corwin Stoppel, Holly Leo, Stephen Boyd, and Todd Haskins.  Free, open to the public.  At Saugatuck High School cafeteria, 401 Elizabeth St, Saugatuck.

 Wed, Oct 9, 5 pm:  Hispanic Heritage Big Read Event:  Médar Serrata, Ph.D., a native of the Dominican Republic and currently associate professor of Spanish at GVSU, will present about Truillo's dictatorship and share perspective on community's Big Read book "In the Time of Butterflies," by Julia Alvarez.  Hosted by Hope's Center for Diversity and Inclusion.  At Schaap Auditorium, Bultman Student Center, in center of campus off Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Wed, Oct 16, 8:30 am:  13th annual Lakeshore Friends of Fair Housing breakfast: "Opening Doors to Housing Choice."  Speaker Tonika Johnson and her multimedia project "Folded Map," a visual investigation of community, illustrating Chicago's residential segregation, that brought residents together for conversation.  Free, but registration required at website: www.fhcwm.org   At Baker Lofts, 217 East 24th St, Holland.

 Community Opportunity

Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) seeks volunteers for its youth programs, ¡Adelante! And ¡Más Adelante!, to help students in grades 9-12 visit college campuses, create resumes, apply for scholarships, complete their schoolwork, and (for older students) submit college applications and financial aid documents.  ¡Adelante! time commitment is Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm; ¡Más Adelante! is Tuesdays 6:30 to 7:30 pm OR Saturdays 10 am to noon.  Contact Yadah Ramirez at yadah@laup.org or call (616) 594-7159 or stop by the LAUP office in Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St, Suite 102, Holland.

  Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years);

 $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years);

 $40 for a nonprofit; $75 for a business. 

  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.  Our fiscal year is October 1 to September 30.
