 Sat, Nov 23, 6 pm-9 pm; dinner at 6:30 pm:  Thanksgiving Potluck organized by Out On The Lakeshore with support from HOSA (Holland's Openly Secular Alliance), "to explore collaboration to make Holland more inclusive for all." Potluck food contributions welcomed but not required.  Helpful if attendees can sign up through Facebook or Eventbrite.  At OOTL center, 451 Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Mon, Nov 25, 6 pm:  Reception to recognize International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (created in response to Mirabal sisters).  A Big Read "In the Time of the Butterflies" event "to learn more about Resilience: Advocates for Ending Violence and what it does to prevent domestic and sexual violence in the community."  Refreshments. At Resilience (formerly Center for Women in Transition), 411 Butternut, Holland.

 Mon, Nov 25, 6:30 to 7:30 pm:  Opening reception for Art for All "Angels" art display. Showcases art created by the Art for All program for adults with cognitive and physical disabilities. Students will be encouraged to talk about their art piece, bio, and photos framed in the gallery. Dance performance by Art for All intern and Hope senior Desiree Love.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 Tues, Nov 26, 6:30 pm to 8 pm:  Housing Resource Fair.  Free event to provide info on city and county programs and grants to assist with finding affordable housing, installing efficient energy, lowering utility bills, and making home repairs. Come see if you or someone you know might qualify.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

Thurs, Dec 12, 7 pm: "Anti-Semitism: Religion, Race, and Nation."  Hope College history professors Dr. Jeanne Petit and Dr. Janis Gibbs lead discussion "focusing on roots of religious anti-Semitism in Europe and how it evolved to a more racial and nationalistic anti-Semitism in 20th century Europe and the United States."  Part of THEM: Images of Separation exhibit events.  Free, donations appreciated.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

 Sun, Dec 22, 2 pm to 3 pm:  One-hour master class to learn simple African dance and drum techniques, led by Mama Jewel of West Michigan's Jewels of Africa troupe; as teacher, performer, and minister, she uses African dance and drumming to teach about African American history and culture.  Suggested donation $10 adults, $5 children.  At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple Ave, Holland.

 Sun, Dec 22, 3:30 pm:  Kwanzaa: annual community event celebrates "rich history of African Americans and 400 years of Imani (faith in God, self, ancestors, community)."  Will feature drum and dance from West Michigan's Jewels of Africa troupe; exhibit of artifacts and images from Kingdom-Grier collection.  Refreshments.  Free, open to the public.  At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple Ave, Holland.

 Exhibits

Truth to Power: Big Read Focus Exhibition, through Dec 20.  Examines how modern and contemporary artists have used art to confront political, social, and economic injustices. Features artists Kathe Kollwitz, Leonard Baskin, Leopold Mendez, Carrie Mae Weems, Esther Hernandez, and Want Guangyi.  At Kruizenga Art Museum, 271 Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Community Opportunities

 City of Holland Human Relations Commission has extended its deadline for submitting nominations for the 2018 Social Justice Awards until Friday, Dec 13.  Awards are given in Housing, Education, Employment, and Government/Community, plus a Student/Youth award.  Submit nominations online at www.humanrelations.cityofholland.com

 ESCAPE Ministries needs volunteers for its ASAP program.  Work with youth suspended or expelled from school, overseeing their work done online during ASAP's hours (8am to 3 pm, M-F).  Time commitment is "whatever you can give," but should be the same time each week so kids can rely on you.
