Fri, Oct 12, 7 pm: Presentation and discussion "Dia de los Muertos, our tradition from roots to branches":  Historic, religious, social and aesthetic aspects of the Day of the Dead and Ofrendas (altars), led by photographer Ketzi Chacon-Zylstra, with a slide show of unique images; also with Renata Fernandez-Dominguez, assistant professor of Spanish studies at Hope College; Chicano artist Efrain Sandoval, and pre-Hispanic musician Isaias Leal Quinametzin.  Free; ages 12 and up.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.

Discussion of a recent incident in which a Grand Haven homeowner hung chairs by ropes in trees above a politically-based sign; the home is near an elementary school and the situation "caused discomfort to staff and children began asking what it meant."  Sponsored by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance with Grand Haven Area Public Schools.  At Grand Haven Community Center Escanaba Room, 421 Columbus St, Grand Haven.

Thurs, Sept 27, 7 pm: Beal Memorial Lecture: "Peacemaking in a Violent World: A Christian Perspective," by Dr. Steve Bouma-Prediger, professor of religion at Hope College. Q&A and fellowship time follow.  Open to all. Hosted by Peace with Justice group of First United Methodist Church, with the collaboration of 28 diverse congregations and groups, including ACEH.  Event named for the late Dr. Philip Beal, peace activist, teacher, ACEH member.  At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.
