Is "In the Community" useful in helping you find out about diversity and multicultural events around here?  We hope so…and we're asking you to consider joining ACEH or renewing your membership as our current fiscal year gets under way.  Memberships support this email and all the other ACEH activities. The dues are $20 a year ($35/two years) for an individual; $30 a year ($50/two years) for a family; $40 for nonprofits; $75 for businesses.

Thurs, Oct 11, 8 pm: National Coming Out Day Dance Party "celebrating LGBT visibility and pride"; everyone is welcome.  Music by DJ g.b.  Presented by Park Theatre and Holland is Ready.  $5 for ages 21 and older; $8 for ages 18-20.  $2 of each cover charge benefits Holland is Ready.  At Park Theatre, 248 South River, Holland.

 

Fri, Oct 12, 7 pm: "Coming to America: From the Netherlands to Ellis Island…and 87 Years in Holland," by Holland resident Janet Veenhoven Redder.  General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); everyone is welcome.  392-5086 or www.harmonyalliance.org   At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

 

Fri, Oct 12, 7 pm: Presentation and discussion "Dia de los Muertos, our tradition from roots to branches":  Historic, religious, social and aesthetic aspects of the Day of the Dead and Ofrendas (altars), led by photographer Ketzi Chacon-Zylstra, with a slide show of unique images; also with Renata Fernandez-Dominguez, assistant professor of Spanish studies at Hope College; Chicano artist Efrain Sandoval, and pre-Hispanic musician Isaias Leal Quinametzin.  Free; ages 12 and up.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.

 

Sat, Oct 13, 10 am to noon: Tissue-paper Flower Making; part of El Dia de los Muertos partnership of Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 16, 7 pm: Travelogue: "Korea, Land of Contrast."  $7.  At Evergreen Commons, 480 State St, Holland.

Thurs, Oct 18, 10 am: "Acts of Courage: A Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month," featuring Paul Chávez, son of the late civil rights leader César Chávez.   Presented by Davenport University and the César Chávez Unity Committee.  At Davenport University Sneden Auditorium, 6191 Kraft Ave SE, Caledonia.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES:

Exhibit, through Nov. 3: Obiter Dicta: Contemporary Latino Artists: works by 5 artists from the lakeshore on display at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Exhibit, through Dec 31: Tenemos una voz ("We have a voice").  Adelante youth art and writings, supported by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th, Holland (closed Tuesdays).
