Is "In the Community" useful in helping you find out about diversity and multicultural events around here?  We hope so…and we're asking you to consider joining ACEH or renewing your membership as our current fiscal year gets under way.  Memberships help support this email and all the other ACEH activities. The dues are $20 a year ($35/two years) for an individual; $30 a year ($50/two years) for a family; $40 for nonprofits; $75 for businesses.

Tues, Oct 2, 7 pm: Award-winning documentary film "The Loving Story": Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple living in Virginia in the 1950s, and their landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that changed history.  $10; tickets at www.sc4a.org or (269) 857-2399.  Sponsored by ACLU of Michigan.  At Saugatuck Center for the Arts, 400 Culver St, Saugatuck.

 

Wed, Oct 3, 6 to 7:30 pm: Hispanic Heritage Month event.  Speaker Vicente Sanchez, Mexican consul in Detroit; others.  Sponsored by La Raza Unida in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Education, Hope College.  At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 4, 7 pm: Community Conversation: Free Speech or Racial Bias. Discussion of a recent incident in which a Grand Haven homeowner hung chairs by ropes in trees above a politically-based sign; the home is near an elementary school and the situation "caused discomfort to staff and children began asking what it meant."  Sponsored by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance with Grand Haven Area Public Schools.  At Grand Haven Community Center Escanaba Room, 421 Columbus St, Grand Haven.

 

Fri, Oct 5, 11 am: Spanish Story Hour: songs, stories, crafts for Spanish-speaking children and family members.  Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES:

Exhibit, through Nov. 3: Obiter Dicta: Contemporary Latino Artists: works by 5 artists from the lakeshore on display at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Exhibit, through Dec 31: Tenemos una voz ("We have a voice").  Adelante youth art and writings, supported by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th, Holland (closed Tuesdays). 

 

EMPLOYMENT:

1) Account clerk-cashier: Part-time for City of Holland. $12.50 per hour. High school graduate; one to two years of business school or college business courses with an accounting emphasis is preferred; six months to a year experience as a cashier or related position.  Applications available on city website www.cityofholland.com

 

2) Program coordinator: Part-time (20-24 hours per week for 10 ½ months) for CASA (Children's After School Achievement), a community program of Hope College.  Two or more years' experience in education, nonprofits, social work, and/or administration; demonstrated experience with and understanding of diverse youth; four-year college degree; bilingual in Spanish preferred.  Deadline to apply is October 12.  Send one-page cover letter addressing how your experience would benefit CASA; a current resume; three professional references, to fgreen@hope.edu
