Sun, Dec 28, 4 pm:  Community celebration of Kwanzaa: "Ujima: The Collective Work IS Our Responsibility" is the theme of this year's celebration. The community is invited. The celebration will include African drumming and dance, children's story telling, exhibits, and more. For information, please contact Rev.             Kwanzaa, a week-long (Dec. 26-Jan 1) celebration of family, community, and culture, is held in the United States and in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. Using seven core principles, Kwanzaa honors African heritage in African-American culture. It was created by Maulana Karenga, and first celebrated in 1966–67.
 
Mon, Jan 19, various times during the day:  Student events to celebrate the life and dreams of  Dr. Martin Luther King.  For the first time, Holland Public Schools will close to mark the day, and students a hosted by Holland Human Relations Commission and Holland Youth Area Council.  Elementary students: "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House," based on curriculum developed by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center.  Middle school students: Bullying prevention.  More details in coming weeks.  Pre-register at hrc@cityofholland.com or call (616) 355-1321; leave name, number of attendees, and a phone number where you can be reached.

Come to the Party! December 6
Is Annual ACEH Holiday Potluck
 
Friends old and new, long-time Michigan residents and newcomers to this area, elders, couples, singles, families and children of all ages, people of every ethnic and cultural background--YOU are warmly invited to the 14th annual Holiday Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).
 
WHEN:  Saturday, December 6, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
 
WHERE:  First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall,
57 West 10th Street, Holland (use 9th Street entrance).  The building is barrier-free.
 
WHAT:  Potluck of delicious foods. Music by Greg Hulsebos. Dances of India by adult and youth ensembles; instrumental and vocal music by the reigning Juneteenth Princess, Gezelle Kingdom-Grier; and holiday variations on salsa and merengue by Moses Mares.
 
Also at the event: children's art activities with Cynthia Hagedorn Fine Art Studio-The Homestead; balloon animals by Kim Romero; and clay art with Annie Olson, plus teen activities with Kenita Harris.  We'll have the traditional group singing of "Let There Be Peace on Earth...And Let it Begin with Me."
 
COST:  The party is free, but we ask that you contribute a dish to share, from your own cultural background (add the recipe!), and bring a healthy food item or paper/hygiene product for the Community Action House food bank.  ACEH provides beverages and table service for the potluck.
 
WHAT ELSE?:  A silent auction and a raffle of wonderful goods and services donated by generous individuals and businesses. (See list below.) Proceeds help support our programs, publications, outreach, partnerships, community events, and scholarships for Upward Bound students.
 
VOLUNTEERS:  Would you like to help out with the party?  ACEH can use more volunteers for set-up (the morning of December 6), various activities during the event, and then for clean-up of the church's Fellowship Hall.  To volunteer, or for general information about the event, call 396-2201.

Community Opportunity:  Community Action House is scheduling interviews (until Dec 19) for participation in its EPIC (Empowering People in Our Community) program which offers coaching and assistance for better employment and career opportunities.  Program dates are Jan 5 - June 20, 2015.  Contact Patricia Reilly at (616) 392-2368, ext. 113, to schedule an interview.
 
Candlelight Vigils:  Silent progressive candlelight vigils in support of Jonathan Bracamontes' family will continue on the 30th day of December and January, beginning at 6 pm at Riley St. and US 31 and continuing through the evening across from Thermatron Industries and then in downtown Holland.  Jonathan, a West Ottawa student, died September 30 near Riley and US 31 after he was hit by a car.  Community members have protested that the Ottawa County prosecutor only charged the driver with a misdemeanor.  For more information, contact hlr4latinosbylatinos@gmail.com
