Thurs, June 4, 9:30 am until 2 pm: Project Homeless Connect, one-day event offering individuals who are homeless or facing housing crisis a variety of services, including health screenings (vision screening and eyeglasses made on site; appointments first come, first served; eligibility determined on site), Angel Food ministry, Medicaid applications, housing assessments, counseling assessments, veterans services, employment information, weatherization, senior services, social security disability assessments, youth services, furry friends pet pantry, toiletries and clothing, MAX transit.  Lunch and snacks provided.  For information, contact Lyn Raymond, (616) 738-1170, ext. 133; oahccoord@gmail.com.  At Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St (at Pine Ave), Holland.

 

Fri, June 12, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH): "Beyond the Bus: The Legacy of Rosa Parks Comes to West Michigan"; information on plans of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development to expand into West Michigan, including Holland.  Brief video on Pathways to Freedom program for youth ages 11-17.  Speakers Elaine Eason Steele, Anita Peek, and Mitch Dennison.  Everyone welcome.  At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

Fri, June 19, 6:30 pm: 6th annual Gay and Lesbian PRIDE event, showing 90-minute DVD that is the culmination of interviews with over 100 area gay and lesbian Christians; "Seven Passages" was created by Calvin College theater professor Stephanie Sandberg, and aims to open/facilitate dialogue with the Christian community.  Discussion follows DVD.  Sponsored by PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan, Holland.

 

Sat, June 20, 1 pm: 9th annual Juneteenth celebration continues through this afternoon with free, family-oriented activities, entertainment, fun, food for purchase.  ACEH will have an information table; Kim Romero will make balloon animals.  At Kollen Park, Van Raalte Ave and 10th St, at Lake Macatawa, Holland.

 

NEWS from LATIN AMERICANS UNITED FOR PROGRESS (LAUP):

 

·          LAUP is providing assistance in English and Spanish for the upcoming (June 12) digital TV conversion.  Walk-in hours are noon to 8 pm until June 19, including weekends; after June 19, walk-in hours are 10 am to 4 pm, seven days a week, until July 31.  At Midtown Center, 96 West 15th (entrance off 16th St parking lot), Holland.

 

·          LAUP is one of only 8 sites in the U.S. chosen to offer ¡Adelante!America to up to 50 students in grades 8 through 10; the program is designed to help young people develop motivation and vision to finish high school and pursue further education/training.  Students will meet Wednesday nights (7 – 8:15 pm) starting June 11 for six months with Hispanic leaders and others from the community to develop leadership skills and an understanding of different careers, and will plan a service project and a leadership conference for other students.  To apply, students can call (616) 392-5058, email roberto.jara@laup.org, or go in person to LAUP, Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St, Suite 102, Holland.  Sponsors: AT&T and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
