Tues, June 9, 6:30 pm: "Safe Neighborhoods, Safe Kids," presentations and discussion on steps for building a safe and strong community.  Sponsored by the Holland Gang Reduction Committee.  At Holland High School Media Center, 600 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.

 

Fri, June 12, 7 pm: "Beyond the Bus: The Rosa Parks Legacy Comes to West Michigan."  General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony; everyone is welcome.  Three speakers share personal experiences with Rosa Parks and discuss plans of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development to expand into West Michigan, including Holland.  Brief video about Pathways to Freedom program for youth ages 11-17; question and answer period. Thurs, June 18, 1 pm: Documentary, "The House We Live In," explores the impact of racial, social, economic, and political systems.  50-minute film followed by half-hour facilitated discussion.  Open to the public.  Offered by Office of Multicultural Education, Hope College.  At Martha Miller Center-Fried Hemenway Auditorium, 10th St and Columbia Ave, Holland.

 

Thurs, June 18, 1 pm until 4 pm: The Clothesline Project, a display of t-shirts by women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, will be displayed on the lawn behind Curragh Irish Pub in downtown Holland.  Sponsored by Center for Women in Transition.  At the corner of 8th St and College Ave, Holland.

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

  • This week, tickets for the Juneteenth black-tie dinner are available for the discounted early-purchase price of $20 by calling 836-8559 (usual price is $25). The dinner will be at 6 pm Friday, June 19, at Jubilee Midtown Campus, 15th St entrance at Pine Ave, Holland.

 

  • Latin Americans United for Progress is offering new round of computer classes, including basic skills, internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.  Call Val Molina or Leroy Hernandez at 392-5058 or email Leroy.hernandez@laup.org.  Classes are held at the LAUP computer lab, Jubilee Midtown Campus, 16th St and Pine Ave, Holland.
