Thurs, June 18, 1 pm: Documentary, "The House We Live In," explores the impact of racial, social, economic, and political systems.  50-minute film followed by half-hour facilitated discussion.  Open to the public.  Offered by Office of Multicultural Education, Hope College.  At Martha Miller Center-Fried Hemenway Auditorium, 10th St and Columbia Ave, Holland.

 

Thurs, June 18, 1 pm until 4 pm: The Clothesline Project, a display of t-shirts by women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, will be displayed on the lawn behind Curragh Irish Pub in downtown Holland.  Sponsored by Center for Women in Transition.  At the corner of 8th St and College Ave, Holland.

 

Fri, June 19, 8 am until 5 pm: Part of the 9th annual celebration of Juneteenth in Holland: 3-on-3 basketball tournament.  At Holland Civic Center, Pine Ave at 8th St.

NEWS from LATIN AMERICANS UNITED FOR PROGRESS (LAUP):

 

·          LAUP is providing assistance in English and Spanish for the upcoming (June 12) digital TV conversion.  Walk-in hours are noon to 8 pm until June 19, including weekends; after June 19, walk-in hours are 10 am to 4 pm, seven days a week, until July 31.  At Midtown Center, 96 West 15th (entrance off 16th St parking lot), Holland.

 

·          LAUP is one of only 8 sites in the U.S. chosen to offer ¡Adelante!America to up to 50 students in grades 8 through 10; the program is designed to help young people develop motivation and vision to finish high school and pursue further education/training.  Students will meet Wednesday nights (7 – 8:15 pm) starting June 11 for six months with Hispanic leaders and others from the community to develop leadership skills and an understanding of different careers, and will plan a service project and a leadership conference for other students.  To apply, students can call (616) 392-5058, email roberto.jara@laup.org, or go in person to LAUP, Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St, Suite 102, Holland.  Sponsors: AT&T and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
