Tue, Feb 9, 3:30 until 5:30 pm: Open house for Holland's Ourstreet/Neighborhood Liaison Office in its new location at City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.

 

Wed, Feb 10, noon: Great Decisions Series: "Enhancing Security Through Peacebuilding," presented by Keith St. Clair, professor at Grand Rapids Community College.  Free light lunch provided.  At Herrick District Library Auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Fri, Feb 12, 7 pm: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony meeting, everyone is welcome (NOTE meeting site, below).  Video, "Justice for All," the story of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American on the U.S. Supreme Court, with local speakers Dr. Fred Johnson III, associate professor of history at Hope College, and Ruth Coleman, director of the Center of African American Art and History in Holland.  People will be able to tour the Center, now under development.  For meeting info, call 392-5086.  At the Center, 21 West 16th St, Holland (just east of intersection of River Ave and 16th St).

 

Fri, Feb 19, 6 pm:  2010 Leonard F. Stoutemire Lecture Series in African American Religious History; public is invited. Speakers: Minister Carlinda Peoples of Angel Community Church, Muskegon, "Black Womanist Thought/Leadership," and Rev. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

 

NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERSHIP ACADEMY 2010: Free, interactive eight-week class to train adults in leadership skills, working with governing bodies, neighborhood issues, and making a difference in the community.  Applications are due Feb 18, 2010; classes begin on Thurs, March 4 and are limited to 15 participants.  Registration required. HOLLAND FIRST is accepting applications for its 2010 class, which begins February 23 and runs through April 20. This free program "promotes cultural awareness and community leadership through exploration of local programs and resources that enhance the quality of life here.  Goal is to understand these community assets and how they work within a diverse population."  Facilitated by Dante Villarreal of the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center.  Classes meet once a week for eight weeks and cover community history, economic development, community resources, law enforcement, government, education, art/culture.  Sponsored by Chemical bank and Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Blue Care Network of Michigan.  For more information or to register, call the Holland Chamber of Commerce, (616) 392-2389
