TODAY, Aug 17, 5 pm: Registration and fee payment deadline for Salsa Showdown (mild, hot, inferno, fruit) that takes place at Holland Farmers Market Sat, Aug 21. Amateur and restaurant division awards.  Call Claire DePree at (616) 796-1210 or email salsa@hollandfarmersmarket.com  Return fees and forms to Downtown Holland Principal Shopping District, 44 West 9^th St,, Holland.

 

Thurs, Aug 19, 6 – 9 pm: Caribbean Art Festival: Caribbean Night, with dancers and Caribbean rhythm performances of salsa, merenge, bachata, guaguanco, mambo, Caribbean urban music; food and wine tasting.  At St. Cecilia Music Society, 24 Ransom Ave, NE, Grand Rapids.

 

Fri, Aug 20, 5 pm: Registration and fee payment deadline for Jalapeño Eating Contest (part of Salsa Showdown on Aug 21).  $10 fee. Fri, Aug 20, 7 pm: PFLAG meeting.  Rev. Dr. Julie Nemecek and her wife of 38 years, Joanne, speak on "technical and human understanding of what it means to be a transgender individual in our society."  Rev. Dr. Nemecek is an ordained Baptist minister, Presbyterian church elder, and a transgender. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Sat, Aug 21, 11 am to 1 pm: Salsa Showdown: Amateur and professional cooks compete for best mild, hot, inferno, or fruit salsa.  $3 tickets for public to taste and vote.  Jalapeño-eating contest at noon.  At Holland Farmers Market, Pine Ave at 8^th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Aug 27 (3 – 10 pm) and Sat, Aug 28 (11 am – 10 pm): Yassou ("welcome"), the first-ever Greek Cultural Festival in Grand Rapids.  Event celebrates the culture and traditions of Greek Orthodox people: live music with Detroit band The Levendes; youth dancers; tours of the church; authentic Greek food for purchase.  (616) 454-6563 or htgoc330@sbcglobal.net  At Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 330 Lakeside Dr NE (between Fulton and Michigan, across from Romence Gardens), Grand Rapids.

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: English as a Second Language Classes

Holland Public Schools is offering classes to help people learn or improve their English; classes begin Mon, Sept 13.  Cost is $20 per year, 12 hours of class per week (4 days a week), flexible schedule (mornings and evenings), 4 levels of English, certified teachers, state-approved curriculum, computer lab.  Registration requirements: Must be 20 years old by Sept 1, 2010; picture ID required; registration/testing takes 1 ½ hours. Registration dates: Tues, Aug 31, 9 am to 3 pm; Thurs, Sept 2, 9 am to 7 pm; Mon, Sept 6, 9 am to 3 pm; Wed, Sept 8, 1 pm to 7 pm—all at Van Raalte School, 461 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.  For more information, call 494-2639.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: LAUP'S 'Steps to Success' Classes:

Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) is offering four types of classes for the Fall 2010 semester:

·         English as a Second Language starts Mon, Sept 13, and meets three times a week: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm

·         Computers, starts mid-September for Basic Computing and Advanced Computing.

·         Spanish GED is an ongoing class that meets on Thursday and Friday nights.

·         Financial Literary, scheduled on demand; expected to start in mid-September.
