Come Out for Fun, Fellowship, and Food!
Sun, Aug 8, 1 pm until 4 pm: 12th Annual Potluck in the Park of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony. Everyone is welcome! Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, and a dish to pass from your ethnic background; ACEH provides beverages and table service. Entertainment, activities. Aug 19, 6 9 pm: Caribbean Art Festival: Caribbean Night, with dancers and Caribbean rhythm performances of salsa, meregue, bachata, guaguanco, mambo, Caribbean urban music; food and wine tasting. At St. Cecilia's Music Society, 24 Ransom, NE, Grand Rapids.
Fri, Aug 20, 7 pm: PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meeting. Rev. Dr. Julie Nemecek and her wife of 38 years, Joanne, speak on "technical and human understanding of what it means to be a transgender individual in our society." Rev. Dr. Nemecek is an ordained Baptist minister, Presbyterian church elder, and a transgender. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: English as a Second Language classes
Holland Public Schools is offering classes to help people learn or improve their English; classes begin Mon, Sept 13. Cost is $20 per year, 12 hours of class per week (4 days a week), flexible schedule (mornings and evenings), 4 levels of English, certified teachers, state-approved curriculum, computer lab.
Registration requirements: Must be 20 years old by Sept 1, 2010; picture ID required; registration/testing takes 1 ½ hours. Registration dates: Tues, Aug 31, 9 am to 3 pm; Thurs, Sept 2, 9 am to 7 pm; Mon, Sept 6, 9 am to 3 pm; Wed, Sept 8, 1 pm to 7 pmall at Van Raalte School, 461 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.
