Wed, Aug 11, 7 pm: "Hiroshima Remembered!"—program to remember August 1945 when American forces dropped two atomic bombs on Japan and Japan surrendered, ending World War II.  Stockpiled nuclear weapons, though reduced in number, constitute a threat today. Lakeshore Women for Peace ask: "What next steps do we need to take? How can we each help create hope for a safer future?"  Part of a film, "White Light; Black Rain," will be followed by panelists (Jasiu Milanowski, Joanne Brooks, Sara Leeland) and discussion facilitated by Jean McFadden.  At Herrick District Library, River Ave at 12th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Aug 12, 6 – 9 pm: Caribbean Art Festival: Artists' reception, with tropical jazz, Caribbean folk dance performance, urban music.  At St. Cecilia's Music Society, TerryBerry Gallery, 24 Ransom, NE, Grand Rapids.

 

Tues, Aug 17, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm: Minority Business Expo.  Free to the public but registration required by Thurs, Aug 12, at (616) 771-0303 or www.grandrapids.org/business-after-hours. Minority entrepreneurs exhibit goods and services.  Light hors d'oeuvres, cash bar. Sponsored by Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  At Davenport University, 6191 Kraft Ave, SE, Grand Rapids.

 

Tues, Aug 17, 5 pm: Registration and fee payment deadline for Salsa Showdown (mild, hot, inferno, fruit) that takes place at Holland Farmers Market Sat, Aug 21. Amateur and restaurant division awards.  Call Claire DePree at (616) 796-1210 or email salsa@hollandfarmersmarket.com  Fees and forms should be returned to Downtown Holland Principal Shopping District, 44 West 9th St,, Holland.

 

Thurs, Aug 19, 6 – 9 pm: Caribbean Art Festival: Caribbean Night, with dancers and Caribbean rhythm performances of salsa, merenge, bachata, guaguanco, mambo, Caribbean urban music; food and wine tasting.  At St. Cecilia's Music Society, 24 Ransom, NE, Grand Rapids.

 

Fri, Aug 20, 5 pm: Registration and fee payment deadline for Jalapeño Eating Contest (part of Salsa Showdown on Aug 21).  $10 fee. Fri, Aug 20, 7 pm: PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meeting.  Rev. Dr. Julie Nemecek and her wife of 38 years, Joanne, speak on "technical and human understanding of what it means to be a transgender individual in our society."  Rev. Dr. Nemecek is an ordained Baptist minister, Presbyterian church elder, and a transgender. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Sat, Aug 21, 11 am to 1 pm: Salsa Showdown: Amateur and professional cooks compete to make the best mild, hot, inferno, or fruit salsa.  $3 tickets for public to taste and vote on salsas.  Jalapeño-eating contest takes place at noon.  At Holland Farmers Market, Pine Ave at 8th St, Holland.

 

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: Parlez-vous français?  ACEH member Greg Hulsebos wants to find one or more people to join him once a week for advanced French tutoring and conversation with a French exchange student at Hope College.  Day and hour of tutoring is flexible.  Contact Greg at hulsebos@sbcglobal.net

 

 

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: English as a Second Language classes

 

Holland Public Schools is offering classes to help people learn or improve their English; classes begin Mon, Sept 13.  Cost is $20 per year, 12 hours of class per week (4 days a week), flexible schedule (mornings and evenings), 4 levels of English, certified teachers, state-approved curriculum, computer lab.

 

Registration requirements: Must be 20 years old by Sept 1, 2010; picture ID required; registration/testing takes 1 ½ hours. Registration dates: Tues, Aug 31, 9 am to 3 pm; Thurs, Sept 2, 9 am to 7 pm; Mon, Sept 6, 9 am to 3 pm; Wed, Sept 8, 1 pm to 7 pm—all at Van Raalte School, 461 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.  For more information, please call 494-2639.
