DEAR READERS OF "In the Community":  The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) hopes this weekly email of events is useful to you.  If you are  an ACEH member, thank you, and you will receive a reminder when's it's time to renew.

If you aren't a member, please consider joining to support "In the Community," our monthly newsletter, and programs like "Bullying" on October 14.  ACEH partners with community groups and events to increase cross-cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity in West Michigan.

Thurs, Oct 13, 11:30 am:  Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) hosts Margaret Regan, author of "The Death of Josseline: Immigration Stories from the Arizona Borderlands." Covers humanitarian issues and U.S. border enforcement, including voices of migrants, border patrol, ranchers, activists, others.  Public is invited.  JFON is an outreach of the United Methodist Church Committee on Relief (UMCOR), offering immigration legal clinics at some 20 locations across the U.S., including Holland and Grand Rapids.  More than 900 clients from 60 countries have been assisted in West Michigan since 2004.  Bring your lunch or buy at library cafĂ©.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. Mon, Oct 17, 7 pm and 8:30 pm: Premier performances of play, "Vision of a New Life," by Max Bush, about Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, Holland's founder.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 20, 7 pm: "The Hijabi Monologues." Muslim-American women's  "humorous, serious, heartfelt" stories.  Free, open to public, parental discretion advised.  In conjunction with Migrations of Islam project of Michigan State University; part of Grand Rapids'  2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding.  At GVSU Eberhard Center, 301 West Fulton, Grand Rapids.

 

Fri, Oct 21, 6 pm: Start of 5-day Founders Festival: Community party celebrates bicentennial of birth (Oct 17) of Rev. Albertus C. Fri, Oct 21, 7 pm:  Documentary film, "Return to El Salvador," with commentary by local pastor Lou Wagenveld, who recently traveled there and will facilitate dialogue on the "socio-political-religious realities of this Central American country from the civil war of the 1980s to the present."  The 68-minute film features refugees "who in a changed climate since the 2009 elections felt free to return and visit; they speak of what made them leave and their hopes for the future."  Free, donations accepted.  At Park Theatre, River Ave. at 10th St, Holland.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SOUGHT
