DEAR READERS OF "In the Community": The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) hopes this weekly email offers you useful information about area multicultural and diversity events.  Please help support ACEH and its publications, community meetings, outreach, and advocacy for justice, equal opportunity, and cross-cultural awareness in West Michigan.   If you are already an ACEH member, thank you, and you will receive an email reminder when it's time to renew. If you aren't a member yet, please consider joining us.  It's easy--there are three ways to become a member: 
(1) Go to the ACEH website www.harmonyalliance.org and click on Join Us, paying through PayPal.  (2) Or mail a check to ACEH, c/o Treasurer Bin Lim, P.O. Box 3007, Holland, 49422.  (3) Or join at any ACEH meeting or social event.  Dues are $20/yr for an individual ($35 2/yrs); $30/yr for a family ($50 2/yrs.), $40/yr for a nonprofit organization; $75/yr for a business.  Instead of paying dues, you may make a pledge of service to ACEH.

Van Raalte Institute with support from Netherland-American Foundation and others.  Free to the public. TONIGHT, Mon, Oct 24, 7 pm: Holland is Ready meeting, with Jon Hoadley, director of the Unity Michigan Coalition; he managed the successful "One Kalamazoo" campaign for a nondiscrimination ordinance in that city.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

Sat, Oct 29, 6 pm to 10 pm: Viva la Vida Festival, celebrating the Day of the Dead, in which people, particularly in Mexico, honor their ancestors.  Costumed procession starts at the Arts Council and ends at the Holland Armory.  Bring your family and enjoy music, dancing, food; costumes encouraged.  Presented by Holland Area Arts Council, LAUP, Holland Museum, Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival. www.hollandarts.org   At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.  (The Armory is on 9th St between River and Central.)

Wed, Nov 2, 7 pm: Film, "The Taqwacores," with lecture by director Eyad Zahra; part of Migrations of Islam project in conjunction with the 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding.  Chronicles a Muslim punk rock scene and examines the complexities of being young and Muslim in modern-day United States.  www.gvsu.edu/artscalendar  At GVSU Pew Grand Rapids campus, Loosemore Auditorium, DeVos Center. 401 West Fulton, Grand Rapids.

Wed, Nov 9, 7 pm: Grand Rapids Community College Diversity Lecture Series:  Maziar Bahari, journalist, filmmaker, former political prisoner in Iran: "Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival."  www.fountainstreet.org

Fri, Nov 11, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony.  "Life Along the Border," by Hope College student and Border Studies program participant Yessenia Aguirre.  Public is invited.  www.harmonyalliance.org  At Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland.

Fun, cultural sharing, family activities, amazing food-it's all at the Annual Holiday Party of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).  And there's more: a silent auction of goods and services contributed by local individuals and businesses, Magic by Maciek, balloon animals by Kim Romero, clay art by Annie Olson, crafts.  Please bring a dish to share from your ethnic background and nonperishable items for a local food bank.  ACEH provides beverages and table service.  At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th Street, Holland.
