 TONIGHT, Mon, Oct 3, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm: First of 7 sessions for Hispanic adults coping with chronic disease. The free  P.A.T.H. (Personal Action Toward Health) program, taught in Spanish by Lu Reyes and Poema Weller, helps people learn to stay independent, increase energy, overcome stress, talk to health care workers, deal with challenges of not feeling well. Limited to 15 people.  Offered by Lakeshore Latino Outreach Center (LLOC) with a grant from Senior Resources.  At LLOC office, 162 East 19th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 4, 6:30 pm to 8:50 pm: Start of 8-week Holland First program to "understand our community through the eyes of diversity."  Explore personal leadership and cultural concerns and focus on area programs and resources (history, business, community resources, law enforcement, government, education, art/culture).  Free, facilitated by Dante Villarreal.  Sponsored by Holland Area Chamber of Commerce.  Call 392-2389 to register.  Held at various locations in the city.

 

 

Tues, Oct 4, and Wed, Oct 5: "Exploring Islam," Hope College Critical Issues Symposium "delving into the multi-layered diversity of Islam's core beliefs and practices."  Tues keynote at 7 pm: Author Reza Aslan, author of "No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam"; at Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.  Wed keynote at 9:30 am: Asma Barlas, author of "Believing Women" in "Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur'an"; Dimnent Chapel.  See www.hope.edu/cis  for schedule of focus and department-sponsored sessions.  All events are open to the public.

Fri, Oct 7, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm: Family night to make little macramé skeletons, as part of Viva la Vida! Celebrating Day of the Dead, Hispanic Heritage celebration co-sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council, Tulipanes Latino Art & Film Festival, Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP), Ambrose Collective, and Holland Museum.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

Sat, Oct 8, 10 am to 2 pm: Free workshop at which volunteer attorneys and law students will help legal permanent residents, 18 or older, complete citizenship applications (other eligibility requirements apply also).  Call (269) 492-7196 for information on what papers to bring to workshop.  Sponsored by Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and Thomas M. Thurs, Oct 13, 11:30 am: Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) hosts Margaret Regan, author of "The Death of Josseline: Immigration Stories from the Arizona Borderlands." Covers humanitarian issues and U.S. border enforcement, including voices of migrants, border patrol, ranchers, activists, others.  Public is invited.  JFON is an outreach of the United Methodist Church, offering immigration legal clinics at some 20 locations across the U.S., including Holland. (See Grand Rapids event, Oct 14.)  Bring own lunch or buy at library café.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 S. River, Holland.

Thurs, Oct 13, 6 pm: Hispanic Heritage Month event.  Sponsored by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education in collaboration with La Raza Unida.  At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, 10th St at Columbia Ave, Holland.

General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) with award-winning video "Bullied: A Boy, A School, and a Case That Made History" and local  panelists.  Public is invited.  Co-sponsored by Holland Human Relations Commission. 392-5086. Fri, Oct 14, 6:30 pm social hour, 7 pm dinner : Freedom Fund banquet of the Muskegon branch of the NAACP.  Speaker: Mrs. Elaine Eason-Steele, co-founder of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development.  Tickets $35 individual; $280 for table of eight.  At Muskegon Heights High School, 2441 Sanford St, Muskegon.

 

Sat, Oct 15, 5 pm to 9 pm: "Taste of Africa" fundraising and social event: food and music from African countries, silent auction, program.
