ACEH was founded in Holland in 1999 and is committed to justice, equal opportunity, cross-cultural understanding, and appreciation for diversity.  Members and friends work together through programs, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. Tues, Sept 18, 7 pm:  Dramatic presentation by Lois B. Owens of GVSU who "changes voices and hats to recreate an imaginary debate" between Susan B. Anthony, co-founder of the National Women's Suffrage Association, and Ida B. Wells, investigative journalist who documented lynchings of black men in the South, and a founder of the National Association of Colored Women.  Cosponsored by Holland League of Women Voters and Hope College Women's Studies.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Sept 19, 4 pm to 6 pm: Public forum on the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, co-hosted by Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) and Grand Rapids Community Relations Commission "regarding the impact that anti-discrimination policies have on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) individuals." Written and verbal testimony accepted.  At GRCC, DeVos Campus, Sneden Hall, Room 108, 415 Fulton SE, Grand Rapids.

 

Wed, Sept 19, 7 pm: Bread for the World president and World Food Prize Laureate Rev. David Beckmann, about how Bread for the World works to create "circle of protection" around funding for programs vital to hungry people in U.S., abroad.  Contact: Mary Johnson, (616) 335-2617.  At Maas Auditorium, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland. 

 

Fri, Sept 21, 11 am: Spanish story time for children and parents ("Tiempo de Cuentos en EspaƱol").  Hear stories, sing songs, do crafts (Escuchando cuentos, cantando canciones, y haciendo manualidades).  Also Oct 5 and 19; Nov 2, 16, and 30; Dec 14. Fri, Sept 21, 7 pm (film at 8 pm): PFLAG meeting, with 57-minute film "Anyone and Everyone" about parents from diverse ethnicities and religions who share "how their children revealed they are gay or lesbian, struggles with non-acceptance by relatives and friends, and being ostracized by religious congregations."  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Tues, Sept 25, and Wed, Sept 26: Hope College Critical Issues Symposium "Reconciliation: Hope in a Divided World."  www.hope.edu/cis/ for full schedule. Tues: 7 pm keynote: Miroslav Volf, director of Yale Center for Faith and Culture, professor of theology at Yale.  Wed 9 am keynote: Mark Charles, speaker, writer and consultant from Fort Defiance, AZ on the Navajo Reservation.  Both at Dimnent Chapel, Hope College, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.

 

 

Thurs, Sept 27, 7 pm: Beal Memorial Lecture: "Peacemaking in a Violent World: A Christian Perspective," by Dr. Steve Bouma-Prediger, professor of religion at Hope College. Q&A and fellowship time follow.  Open to all. Hosted by Peace with Justice group of First United Methodist Church, with the collaboration of 28 diverse congregations and groups, including ACEH.  Event named for the late Dr. Philip Beal, peace activist, teacher, ACEH member.  At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 2, 7 pm: Award-winning documentary film "The Loving Story," about Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple living in Virginia in the 1950s, and their landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that changed history.  $10 reserved seats; tickets at www.sc4a.org or (269) 857-2399.  Sponsored by ACLU of Michigan.  At Saugatuck Center for the Arts, 400 Culver St, Saugatuck.

 

Wed, Oct 3, 6 to 7:30 pm: Hispanic Heritage Month event.  Sponsored by La Raza Unida in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Education, Hope College.  At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 11, 4:30 to 6:30 pm: Latino Food Festival.  Non-student price $5.  At Phelps and Cook Dining Halls, Hope College, 10th St, Holland.
