Mon, Jan 21, 4 pm: Presentation "Islam and Muslim Americans: An
Introduction to Understanding Islam," by David Serio of the Arab
American National Museum, Dearborn. Hosted by Van Wylen Library. At
Graves Hall, Hope College, College Ave at 11th St.
Mon, Jan 21, 7 pm: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration:
"Strength to Love." Led by Rev. Denise Grier and Rev. Wayne Coleman. 4
pm: Youth Rally. At Maple Avenue Ministries, 427 Maple, Holland.
Tues, Jan 22, noon: Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) fundraiser focused
on immigration and social justice issues. Documentary "Jasmine's
Story"; discussion with Jasmine Franco and Rev. Melanie Carey and
presentation by Dr. Stephen Monsma, author of "Healing for a Broken
World." Includes lunch (suggested donation $15); register with Mary

Tues, Jan 22, noon: Calvin College January Series: "North Korea-China:
A Modern-Day Underground Railroad," by author, consultant, NGO founder,
and North Korean specialist Mike Kim. In person at Calvin College
Covenant Center, 3201 Burton Ave SE, Grand Rapids; via webcast at
Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap, Holland.
Fri, Jan 25, and Sat, Jan 26, 8 pm and 10:30 pm: Film, "The Great
Debaters," based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at
Wiley College in Texas who in 1935 inspired students to form the
school's first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the
national championship. $2. At Room 102, VanderWerf Hall, 27 Graves
Place, Hope College campus, Holland.
Sat, Jan 26, 9 am to 5 pm DTE Energy Ethnic Heritage Festival with
music, dance, crafts, and food from ethnic groups in West Michigan.

Sun, Jan 27, 4 pm: Film, "The Line." 40-minute documentary by
Emmy-Award winning producer Linda Midgett that asks viewers to
reconsider their stereotypes about people who live in poverty.

Mon, Jan 28, 6 to 9 pm: "Transforming Communities: An Introduction to
Community Development," led by Jay VanGroningen, executive director of
Communities First Association, and Judy Van Dyke, Neighborhood
Connections director. Light meal served; registration required at

Mon, Jan 28, 7 pm: "G92: How Faith and Justice Relate to Immigration,"
with Matthew Soerens, co-author of "Welcoming the Stranger: Justice,
Compassion, and Truth in the Immigration Debate," and a community
panel, including JFON attorney Liz Balck. Co-sponsored by Phelps
Scholars and Hope United for Justice. At Wichers Auditorium, Nykerk
Hall, mid-campus at Hope between College and Columbia Aves, at 11th St,
Holland.
Thurs, Jan 31, 3 to 4:30 pm: Retirement recognition event honoring Al
Serrano, Community and Human Relations Coordinator for the City of
Holland; he has served the city for 27 years. At Holland City Hall,

Mon, Feb 4, 7 pm: 2013 Phelps Scholars Schregardus Lecture: "Faces
Seen, Hearts Unknown: Latino Students and College Persistence," by
Yolanda Vega, assistant director of the Hope College TRiO Upward Bound
program. At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St,
Holland.
Sat, Feb 9, 2 to 5 pm: Korean New Year Celebration, with Chicago Korean
Dancing Company, Tae Kwon Do Mission Team from Korea, Korean music, and

Center of African American Art and History featuring guitarist Nick
Colionne, jazz, vocals, R&B, blues, and soul artist. Funds will go for
construction and computers to implement the Ancestry.com program at
CAAAH. Tickets: $75 (back); $100 (mid-section); $150 premier seating.

by Dr. Fred L. Johnson III of Hope College; to consider the "struggles,
challenges, and triumphs of African Americans in their efforts to
achieve justice and the blessings of full citizenship in the U.S.; also
to engage the question, 'Why is there a need for the 'black church?'"

EXHIBIT
Now through March 2: Collective exhibition "Cuba: Re-Encounter the
Myth," with works of Cuban painters Dr. Mercedes Cobas-Gelis, Anaisa
Salazar, and Jorge Guanche-Garcia. The exhibit will also feature works
by Cuban-born artist Roberto Cala, a designer and craftsman of
marquetry and inlaid wood finishes. Sponsored by Holland Area Arts
