Mon, Jan 28, 7 pm: "G92: How Faith and Justice Relate to Immigration," with author Matthew Soerens and a community panel, including JFON attorney Liz Balck.  Co-sponsored by Phelps Scholars and Hope United for Justice.  At Wichers Auditorium, Nykerk Hall, mid-campus at Hope between College and Columbia Aves at 11th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Jan 29, 6 pm to 8 pm: Asian Culture Club event presented by The Arena  District; includes free Asian (Japanese and Thai) hors d'oeuvres, speakers from West Michigan Asian community, Japanese tea ceremony, karate and tai chi demonstrations, Laotian dance, music, origami "live art," raffle, more.  At six.one.six, J W Marriott, 235 Louis Campeau Promenade NW,   Grand Rapids.

 

Thurs, Jan 31, noon: "Beyond Diversity: Challenging Racism in an Age of Backlash," by nationally known anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise.  How most "tolerance" training fails to address fundamental structures of racism and inequality; focusing on personal prejudice rather than institutional bias is inadequate for building an anti-racist movement and results in a negative impact on all Americans.  At Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Thurs, Jan 31, 3 to 4:30 pm: Retirement recognition event to honor Al Serrano, Community and Human Relations Coordinator for the City of Holland; he has served the city for 27 years.  At Holland City Hall, 270 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Jan 31, 6 to 9 pm: Asian New Year Festival: Asian cuisine and traditional performances such as a dragon dance, Chinese martial arts, national dance, and cultural fashion show.  At Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

Mon, Feb 4, 7 pm: 2013 Phelps Scholars Schregardus Lecture: "Faces Seen, Hearts Unknown: Latino Students and College Persistence," by Yolanda Vega of the Hope College TriO Upward Bound program.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Feb 6, 5 to 6:30 pm: Soul Food Festival. $5 for community members.  At Phelps and Cook Dining Halls, Hope College campus, 10th St between College and Columbia, Holland.

 

Wed, Feb 6, 6 pm: "Vietnamerica: A Family's Journey," by Gia Bao (GB) Tran, Vietnamese American author and artist raised in South Carolina as the son of immigrants.  At Cook-DeWitt Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Fri, Feb 8, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony.  Open to the public.  Location and topic to be announced.  www.harmonyalliance.org or 396-2201.

Through March 2: Collective exhibition "Cuba: Re-encounter the Myth": Cuban painters Dr. Mercedes Cobas-Gelis, Anaisa Salazar, and Jorge Guanche-Garcia and works by Roberto Cala, craftsman of marquetry and inlaid wood finishes.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council, Galeria America LLC, and  Folkcuba LLC.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Snow removal volunteers are requested on an as-needed basis by Disablity Network/Lakeshore to help people in our community who are not able to shovel or plow their own driveways and sidewalks.  Interested? Contact Lucia, community access specialist, at (616) 396-5326.
