"Love is Stronger than Hate": Support Fund
 
As a follow-up to recent attacks that damaged vehicles of African Americans in Holland, the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony has established an account at Macatawa Bank to help reimburse Rev. Wayne and Ruth Coleman and Marvin Younger for auto insurance deductibles and other expenses they will have to pay as a result of the incidents.   
  
 
Checks should be written to ACEH Support Fund: Love is Stronger than Hate, with the account number 7201 1337, and deposited at any Macatawa Bank branch.

TONIGHT, Tues, Aug 6, 5 pm: National Night Out.  Event bringing together residents and neighborhood groups to facilitate cooperation and take a stand against crime.  Music, entertainment, kids' games, pie-eating contest, child ID program, bingo, vintage car show, dunk tank, hot dogs and ice cream.  American Legion Band (7:30 pm).  At Kollen Park, Lake Macatawa and Van Raalte Ave, Holland.
 
Thurs, Aug 8, 11 am to 3 pm: Project Homeless Connect. Event geared toward persons who are homeless at well as those in housing crisis.  Offers information and a variety of free services, including health tests, veterans services, child ID cards, GED registration, housing assessments.  Free lunch and giveaways that include door prizes, personal care items, family photographs, haircuts, more.  For more information, please contact Lyn Raymond at (616) 738-1170, ext. 133.  At Holland Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St, Holland.
   
Sat, Aug 10, 10:30 am: Lakeshore Spanish-English Language Exchange:  Grand Rapids has a Spanish Language Meetup group, and several of the members live right here in Holland.  So we thought it made sense to save gas, meet new people, and get something going locally.  We are as interested in teaching English as learning Spanish.  The idea is to have a cultural exchange, to help each other learn, to make friends, and to have fun in the process.
 
Grand Rapids tiene un Meetup para practicar el español, y algunos de los miembros vivimos aquí mismo en Holland.  Pensábamos que tenía sentido ahorrar gasolina, conocer a nueva gente, y crear un nuevo grupo local.  Nos interesa tanto enseñar inglés como aprender español.  La idea es tener un intercambio cultural, ayudarnos a aprender, hacer amigos, y divertirnos en el proceso!  At Little Puebla, 12331 James St, Holland.
Tues, Aug 13, 6 pm: "Justice for Some or Justice for All?: A Community Conversation on Race."  Discussion will follow up on recent vandalism to vehicles owned by African Americans in Holland, and other issues related to race and ethnicity, and what steps can be taken to move forward.  Open to all.  For more information, contact wayne465@yahoo.com. Sat, Aug 17, noon to 6 pm: Taste of Asia, to showcase Asian American community in the Lakeshore area, with culture, dance, music, fashion, and authentic Asian food.  Produced by Youth Ethnic Leadership League (YELL) in partnership with Lao Lahanam Association (LAOLAHA) to grow stronger bonds among the Asian American community and within West Michigan at large and to help advance Laotian students in higher education.  Info and sponsorship opportunities from Kavy Lenon atkvlenon@gmail.com  or (616) 298-4735; contact LAOLAHA at  http://www.laolaha.org.  At Ottawa County Fairgrounds, Ottawa Beach Rd., Holland.

PAID-ON-CALL FIREFIGHTERS: CITY OF HOLLAND
The City of Holland Department of Public Safety has openings for Paid-On-Call (volunteer) firefighters.  Paid-On-Call firefighters respond to structure fires and other significant emergencies on an on-call basis and participate in fire fighting and rescue work alongside full-time members.  They are also called upon to take part in community involvement activities and other needs of the department.  Candidates must be at least 18 years old, high school graduates, have a valid driver's license, live in or close to city limits, and be able to respond to fires at any time of the day or night. City residency is preferred.  Additional college course work or technical education is desirables.  Fire fighting experience is a plus, but not required.  Send resume and cover letter by Friday, Aug 23 to: City of Holland, Human Resources Dept, 270 South River Ave, Holland, MI 49423.
