"Love is Stronger than Hate": Support Fund
As a follow-up to recent attacks that damaged vehicles of African Americans in Holland, the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony has established an account at Macatawa Bank to help reimburse Rev. Wayne and Ruth Coleman and Marvin Younger for auto insurance deductibles and other expenses they will have to pay as a result of the incidents.
Checks should be written to ACEH Support Fund: Love is Stronger than Hate, with the account number 7201 1337, and deposited at any Macatawa Bank branch.

Tues, Aug 13, 6 pm: "Justice for Some or Justice for All?: A Community Conversation on Race." Local panelists and discussion will follow up on recent vandalism to vehicles owned by African Americans in Holland, other issues and community experiences related to race and ethnicity, and what steps can be taken to move forward. Sat, Aug 17, 8 am - 1:30 pm (public tasting,11 am to 1 pm; Jalapena Eating Contest, noon): Holland Farmers Market Salsa Showdown and Jalapeno Eating Contest. Judged competition for amateur and professionals to prepare--and the public to taste and vote on--salsas in mild, hot, inferno, and fruit categories. $3 for public to taste/vote. Cash prizes and medals in Amateur, Professional, and People's Choice categories. Sat, Aug 17, noon to 6 pm: Taste of Asia, event to showcase the Asian American community in the Lakeshore area: culture, dance, music, fashion, and authentic Asian food. Produced by Youth Ethnic Leadership League (YELL) in partnership with Lao Lahanam Association (LAOLAHA) to grow stronger bonds among the Asian American community and within West Michigan and to help advance Laotian students in higher education. Fri, Aug 16, 7 pm (support group), 8 pm (program): PFLAG meeting to hear Leslie Boker, incoming president of Out 'N' About, the gay/straight student organization at Grand Valley, will present a personal story about gender identity, the difficulties that come with living outside of categories, and what an inclusive future should look like. Tues, Aug 20, 6:30 pm (Native English speakers) and 7:30 pm (Native Spanish speakers). Informational meeting for Reciprocal Language Partnership Class that will be held this fall. RLP pairs people who want to learn or improve their English language skills with people who want to learn or improve their Spanish. Hands-on housing simulation event, including speakers and a service project, "to educate about issues related to homelessness and affordable housing; promote efforts to end homelessness; and raise awareness of local challenges in obtaining housing." Organized by AmeriCorps members who serve through Michigan's Coalition to End Homelessness.
