TONIGHT, Mon, Sept 16, 7 pm: Voter Registration Training with the city, Holland League of Women Voters and LAUP. After training, the county certifies participants to register new citizens, young people, people who have recently moved, and others for the November elections. At Holland City Hall, 270 S. River, Holland.
TONIGHT, Mon, Sept 16, 7 pm: "No Human Being is Illegal: Immigration Policies in Michigan," discussion hosted by American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, Western Branch. Free, open to the public. At Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, 2 Fulton West, Grand Rapids.
Tues, Sept 17, 11 am: Constitution Day event by Hope College Political Science Department: "Is Gay Marriage a Constitutional Right? Reflections on the Supreme Court's Recent Rulings," presented by Dr. Joel Toppen and responded to by Dr. Jeffrey Polet, both of the faculty. Tues, Sept 17, 5:30 pm reception, 6 pm program: Michigan Department of Civil Rights 50th Anniversary Community Conversation. Program and panel of state and local leaders discussing civil rights-related issues. Open to the public. Tues, Sept 17, 6 pm: "Justice for Some or Justice for All? Community Conversation on Race."

Wed, Sept 18, 6:30 to 8 pm: Four-session (Sept 18 and 25; Oct 2 and 9) workshop: "Church Between Borders," offering "a fresh way to talk about immigration, build community, and explore related ethnical and justice issues." Thurs, Sept 26, 12:15 pm: Film, "Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance."
6:30 pm: Harlem Renaissance Poetry Reading. Both events in connection with current exhibit, "Promise of Freedom: Selections from the Arthur Primas Collection"-- 75 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, graphics, and documents showcasing significant African American artists from the last 150 years. Sat, Sept 28, 7 pm: Documentary "Black and Blue, the Story of Gerald Ford, Willis Ward and the 1934 Michigan-Georgia Tech Football Game." When Georgia Tech demanded that U-M's African American player Willis Ward be benched before the southern team would play U-M, Gerald Ford threatened to quit the U-M team and students and community protested the decision to keep Ward out of the game; the incident is said to have helped Michigan turn a corner in race relations and shaped Ford's views on civil rights and racial equality all the way to the White House.
