"Love is Stronger than Hate": Support Fund
 As a follow-up to July attacks that damaged vehicles of African Americans in Holland, the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony has established an account at Macatawa Bank to help reimburse Rev. Wayne and Ruth Coleman and Marvin Younger for auto insurance deductibles and other expenses they will have to pay as a result of the incidents.   
  
 Checks should be written to "ACEH Support Fund: Love is Stronger than Hate," with the account number 7201 1337, and deposited at any Macatawa Bank  branch.

TONIGHT, Mon, Sept 9, 7 pm:  Holland is Ready event. "An Outing" invitation to fellowship with pro-equality individuals and businesses in Holland.  At 84 East restaurant, 84 East 8th St, Holland.
 
Tues, Sept 10, 7:30 pm: Tulipanes event: Movie and tapas: "Searching for Sugarman"; two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock 'n' roller Sixto Rodriguez; Rodriguez still lives today in Detroit.  Tickets $15 at the door; seating is limited.  Doors open an hour before the showing.  At Holland Civic Theatre, 50 West 9th St, Holland.
 
Wed, Sept 11, 7:30 pm: Tulipanes event: Film: "Cinco de Mayo: The Battle"; in 1862 an inexperienced Mexican army defeated Napoleon III's invading French forces. Film features all-star Mexican cast and presents from the point of view of politicians, generals, soldiers, wives, and two young lovers who meet on the battlefield.  Free.  At Holland Civic Theatre, 50 West 9th St, Holland.
 
Thurs, Sept 12, 6 pm-8 pm:  Firelight Festival and Grand Opening for Benjamin's Hope, a 40-acre farm and residential community offering a "meaningful place of vocation, recreation, and spirituality" for persons with autism/certain developmental disabilities.  Event includes hayrides, hotdogs, face painting, music, animals (6 to 7 pm) and a program (7 to 8 pm).  www.benjaminshope.net   At Benjamin's Hope, 15468 Riley St, Park Township, Holland.

Thurs, Sept 12, 7:30 pm:  Tulipanes event: Film: "A Better Life"; a gardener in East Los Angeles struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give him the opportunities the father never had. Free.  At Holland Civic Theater, 50 West 9th St, Holland.
 
Thurs, Sept 12 – Nov. 2: Ofrenda Installation by artist Roli Mancera in celebration of El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).  According to centuries-old beliefs, the souls of the dead return to earth for one day of the year, wending their way home once the sun passes its zenith on November first. This is the time for families to begin setting up the traditional altar de muertos, laying out an offering of items intended to draw the dead and ease their journey homeward. Key elements of the ofrenda, laid out in a colorful and eye-pleasing symmetrical composition, are steeped in symbolism with roots in both Christian and indigenous beliefsAt Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.
 
Fri, Sept 13: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) will not hold a general meeting in September, but encourages members and friends to attend two public events of the 13th annual Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival at DeWitt Theater, Columbia Ave at 12th St, Holland:   
--  6:30 pm:  Mexika:  presentation of indigenous music/dance from Mexico.  Free.
--  7:30 pm:  Film, "Xingu," Brazilian drama about three brothers who become involved in conflict between the government and developers and the indigenous people who live in the area and who want to preserve their land.  Free.
 
Sat, Sept 14, 11 am: Tulipanes event: Film: "Garifuna in Peril"; a Garifuna language teacher in Honduras struggles to preserve his indigenous culture and communal lands "in the face of tourism's encroachment and personal betrayal."  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

Mon, Sept 16, 7 pm: Voter Registration Training with Holland League of Women Voters.  After training, the county certifies participants to register new citizens, young people, people who have recently moved, and others for the November elections.  At Holland City Hall, 270 S. River, Holland.
 
Mon, Sept 16, 7 pm: "No Human Being is Illegal: Immigration Policies in Michigan," discussion hosted by American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, Western Branch.  Free, open to the public. At Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, 2 Fulton West, Grand Rapids.

Tues, Sept 17, 6 pm: "Justice for Some or Justice for All? Community Conversation on Race."
