conducted by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance.

Fri, Oct 18, 7 pm (support group), 8 pm (program): PFLAG meeting
showing DVD "The Doors Are Open," profiling King Avenue United
Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555
Michigan Ave, Holland.

Sat, Oct 19, 10 am to noon: Workshop with Anna and Luz Martinez to make
nichos. Viva la vida event featuring a traditional Mexican and Latin
American folk craft to create small calaveras (little skeletons) for a
decorated nicho (altar box). Ages 12 and up; space is limited. $5
suggested donation. At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St,
Holland.

Mon, Oct 21, 7 pm: Forum to hear candidates for Holland City Council.
Election takes place Tues, Nov 5. Sponsored by the League of Women
Voters/Holland Area and Westcore Neighbors. At Holland City Hall
council meeting room, 270 South River.

Tues, Oct 22, 6 pm: Justice for Some or Justice for All? Part 3.
Panelist will provide insight on the Dutch culture, followed by
discussion of strategies to address issues on the "wish list" from the
previous meeting. At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th, Holland.

Thurs, Oct 24 and Fri, Oct 25, 8 am to 4:30 pm: Two-day Racial Equity

Thurs, Oct 24, 7 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series of Hope College:
Domingo Martinez reads from his National Book Award-winning memoir,
"The Boy Kings of Texas." At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College
Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Oct 24, 7:30 pm: Hope College Great Performance Series: Chicago
Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, representing Afro-Cuba jazz and music from
all of Latin America; they have explored writing new music based on
Argentinian tango, Dominican merengue, Puerto Rican bomba and plena,
Spanish flamenco, and Jamaican reggae. Tickets $18; seniors $13;

Altars, local ofrendas honoring loved ones. At Herrick District

Mon, Oct 28, 6:50 pm: 7th annual China Town Hall, presented by World
Affairs Council of Western Michigan and the National Committee on U.S.
China Relations. Dr. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of
State and now chair of a global strategy firm and an investment
advisory firm, will speak via a live webcast, followed by an in-person
presentation by Robert Daly of the Kissinger Institute on China and the
United States. $10 World Affairs Council members; $20 non-members; pay

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
(1) The Hope College TRIO Upward Bound students are selling desserts,
cookie dough, pizzas, subs, soups, and more from the Goodies Factory to
raise funds for the Upward Bound Scholarship & Enrichment Fund. Stop
by the Upward Bound office in the lower level of Graves Hall (College
Ave at 11th St, Holland) on or before 2 pm, Tuesday, Oct 22, to place
and pay for an order. Orders may be picked up at the office before 3
pm, Wednesday, Nov. 13.

(2) The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) is seeking
donations of goods and services from individuals and businesses for its
silent auction Saturday, Dec. 7; the auction is part of the annual
Holiday Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party with family activities,
performances, music, ethnic foods, and great fellowship. If you can
contribute a gift certificate to a restaurant or other business, a book
relevant to diversity, handmade jewelry or crafts, art works and
photographs, or a gift certificate for a service, please contact
Auction Chair Ngoc Mong Pham at ngocpham02@hotmail.com All the
proceeds help support ACEH outreach, programs, publications,
scholarship fund, and community events.
