TONIGHT, Mon, Oct 21, 7 pm: Forum to hear candidates for Holland City
Council. Election takes place Tues, Nov 5. Sponsored by the League of
Women Voters/Holland Area and Westcore Neighbors. At Holland City Hall
council meeting room, 270 South River.

Tues, Oct 22, 6 pm: Justice for Some or Justice for All? Part 3. Cal
Hoogstsra will share on the topic "Dutch Isolationist," followed by
discussion of strategies to address issues on the "wish list" from the
previous meeting. At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th, Holland.

Wed, Oct 23, 7 pm: Performance by Act on Racism theater troupe from
GVSU, followed by discussion. AoR's stories and audience responses
will help to further "a safe and inclusive campus." Community members
are invited to attend. Sponsored by Hope College Theatre Department
and the Office of Multicultural Education. At DeWitt Theatre, Columbia
Ave at 11th and 12th Sts, Holland.

Wed, Oct 23, 7:30 pm: Concert of Indian music, including classical and
film music; presented by vocalist Kasturi Paigude; co-singer Amit
Deshpande; Mandar Phadke, harmonium; Hemant Babtiwale, tabla, and
Suneetha Kodali, master of ceremonies. Free. At Wichers Auditorium,
Nykerk Hall of Music, Hope College central campus, 12th St between
College and Columbia, Holland.

Thurs, Oct 24 and Fri, Oct 25, 8 am to 4:30 pm: Two-day Racial Equity
Institute, conducted by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance.

Thurs, Oct 24, 7 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series of Hope College:
Domingo Martinez reads from his National Book Award-winning memoir,
"The Boy Kings of Texas." At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College
Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Oct 24, 7:30 pm: Hope College Great Performance Series: Chicago
Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble: Afro-Cuba jazz and music of Latin America;
includes new music based on Argentinian tango, Dominican merengue,
Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Spanish flamenco, and Jamaican reggae.
Tickets $18; seniors $13; under age 18, $6, from Hope Ticket Office,

Sat, Oct 26, 10 am to noon: Viva la Vida event to decorate sugar skulls

Mon, Oct 28 - Sat, Nov. 2: Viewing of el Día de los Muertos Community
Altars, local ofrendas honoring loved ones. At Herrick District

Mon, Oct 28, 6:45 pm: 7th annual China Town Hall, "Issues in U.S.-China
Relations," by World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. Dr.
Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State, will speak via live
webcast, followed at 7:45 pm, in person, by Robert Daly of the
Kissinger Institute on China and the U.S. $10 WAC members; $20
non-members; pay at door. At Wege Student Center Ballroom, Aquinas
College, Grand Rapids. NOTE: New time and location from previous

Tues, Oct 29, 6 pm: A Community Conversation, presented by
multicultural organization BL2END: interactive town-hall discussion on
Michigan's economy, education, quality of life, and other topics geared
toward improving our community. Input will be distributed to leaders

Fri, Nov 1, 7 pm: Viva la Vida event: Panel of community members talk
about their experiences of el Día de los Muertos in their country of
origin as well as in the U.S. At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St.

Sat, Nov 2, 10 am: Día de los Muertos Storytime and Craft family
activity. At Children's area, upper level, Herrick District Library,

Sat, Nov 2, 2 to 4 pm: Viva la Vida: Lotería. Family event to play the
Mexican game Lotería, similar to Bingo. Prizes; Mexican refreshments.

Tues, Nov 5, 5 pm: Day of the Dead Altered Book Workshop with Kelli
Perkins. Basic supplies provided but bring small photos of loved ones
and/or favorite ephemera and charms to include in your book. Limited
to 20 people; registration required. At Herrick District Library, 300

Wed, Nov 6, 6:45 pm: General meeting of Alliance for Cultural and
Ethnic Harmony (ACEH), showing new documentary film "Our Fires Still
Burn: The Native American Experience" featuring a businessman,
journalist, artist, and youth advocate. Discussion and refreshments

Annual Dinner of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP). $50 per

(1) The Hope College TRIO Upward Bound students are selling desserts,
cookie dough, pizzas, subs, soups, from the Goodies Factory to raise
funds for the Upward Bound Scholarship & Enrichment Fund. Stop by
Upward Bound office, lower level of Graves Hall (College Ave at 11th
St, Holland) before 2 pm, Tues, Oct 22, to place and pay for an order.

(2) The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) is seeking
donations of goods and services from individuals and businesses for its
silent auction Saturday, Dec. 7; auction is part of annual Holiday
Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party (5 pm to 8:30 pm) at First United
Methodist Church with family activities, performances, music, ethnic
foods, and fellowship. If you can contribute a gift certificate to a
restaurant or other business, a book relevant to diversity, event
tickets, handmade jewelry or crafts, art, photographs, or a service,
please contact Auction Chair Ngoc Mong Pham at ngocpham02@hotmail.com
Proceeds help support ACEH outreach, programs, publications,
scholarship fund, and community events.
