Wed, Aug 13, 10 am to 2 pm:  Project Homeless Connect, a one-day event with free services for people who are homeless or facing a housing crisis (health tests, dental, housing assessments, GED registration, Michigan Works!, Medicaid enrollment, personal care items, family photos, haircuts, children's crafts, more).  Free lunch included.   Volunteers also needed to help participants in various ways (volunteer orientation at 9 am, with breakfast).  Contact Lyn Raymond (616) 396-7811 or lakeshorehousingalliance@gmail.com.  Sponsored by Lakeshore Housing Alliance and Greater Ottawa County United Way.  At Holland Midtown Center, 96 West 15th St, Holland.
 
Fri, Aug 15, 7 pm (support group), 8 pm (program): PFLAG meeting will hear PFLAG regional director and his wife, from Ohio, update about happenings in national PFLAG, followed by Q&A on marriage equality and other issues.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
 
Sat, Aug 16, 11 am: Salsa Showdown. Competition to create best salsa recipe using ingredients at the Eighth Street Farmers Market.  Open to amateur and professional chefs; must register online. Public participates by tasting and voting, along with panel of judges.  JalapeƱo eating contest at noon; must register online.  Registration information at www.salsashowdown.org  Awards ceremony at 1:30 pm  At Eighth Street Farmers Market, Pine Ave between 7th and 9th Sts, Holland
                                                 
Community Opportunity: Great Start Program for Preschoolers
Ottawa County's Great Start Readiness Program has openings for more than 1,000 preschoolers for free or low-cost early childhood education this year.  Operated through the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) working with school districts, community agencies, and child care centers.  Children in Ottawa County who are 4 years old by Oct 1, 2014, are eligible.  A family of four can earn up to $59,625 and still qualify.  Half-day and full-day sessions available.  Visit www.oaisd.org/GSR-Papp, or www.successandmychild.org or call (616) 796-1504.
 
Community Opportunity: Camp for Girls with Disabilities
The 2014 Her Power! Her Pride!
