Your dues  help pay for  this email and all the other Alliance  activities: $20 a year ($35/two years) for an individual; $30 a year ($50/two years) for a family; $40 for nonprofits; $75 for businesses.  The ACEH fiscal year is October 1- September 30.

ACEH was founded in Holland in 1999 and is committed to justice, equal opportunity, cross-cultural understanding, and appreciation for diversity.  Members and friends work together through programs, outreach, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. "In the Community" is also on the ACEH website.

Tues, Nov 18, 6:30 pm:  " Harper Lee, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and Their Enduring Messages," presented by Dr. Wayne Flynt, professor emeritus at Auburn University and a friend of author Harper Lee, discussing race and class issues as related to literature and history.  Music by Greg Hulsebos.  Part of Holland's Big Read series.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.
 
Wed, Nov 19, noon – 1 pm: "The Native American Mascot: Tribute or Stereotype?"  Diversity Brown Bag Series of GVSU.  Discussion hosted by Belinda Bardwell, former Tribal Council leader at Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians and member of GVSU Native American Advisory Board.  At Room 2204 Pere Marquette, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley campus, Allendale.
 
Thurs, Nov 20, 8 pm-10 pm, and other: Boo Radley Day, sponsored by Holland Spiritual Direction, Via Celebra, and CAYA 20/30.  "Celebrate the beloved "To Kill a Mockingbird" character by taking part in themed activities and reflecting on life lessons that he represents." Part of Holland's Big Read series.  See Boo Radley Day Facebook page for celebration ideas. At the least, spend some time reflecting: Who in our community is shunned, misunderstood, mistreated, or for some difference lives in hiding? How might you view (or treat) them in a new way?  Evening gathering at Our Brewery, downtown 8th St, Holland.
 
Fri, Nov 21, 7:30 am – noon: Diversity & Inclusion Forum: Attract, Retain, and Cultivate Diverse Talent.  Three-part program: Keynote presentation by Peter Gomez and Susan Medina of an executive search firm; community panel of local businesses/organizations sharing best practices and innovations; cultural intelligence workshop by Alan Headbloom, on creating an inclusive company culture.  Hosted by Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.  $50 members; $65 future members.  At Salvation Army Kroc Center, 2500 South Division, Grand Rapids.
 
Fri, Nov 21, 4 pm-5:30 pm:  Phelps Scholars presentation of research posters on a variety of global issues.  Open to the public.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Fri, Nov 21, 7 pm:  Art reception and open house.  Artist Joel Schoon-Tanis and area high school students present art they created in response to reading "To Kill a Mockingbird"; celebrate the finale of The Big Read series.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.
 
Mon, Nov 24, 7 pm: 15th annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration.  Give thanks, promote peace with prayers, music, sacred writings, reflections; presentations from Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, more.  Will take donations for Downtown Food Pantry (peanut butter, beef stew) and Habitat for Humanity.  Free, open to the public; all faith and non-faith traditions welcome.  interfaith@gvsu.edu or (616) 331-5702. SAVE THE DATE!  ACEH Holiday Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party, Saturday, December 6:  Annual ACEH community event, with entertainment, music, children's activities, silent auction, great food, fun and fellowship.  Bring a dish to share from your cultural background, and a nonperishable, healthy food or personal hygiene item for local food bank.  ACEH provides beverages and table service. At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th, Holland. 
 
Community Opportunity
Community Action House is scheduling interviews (now to Dec 19) for participation in its EPIC (Empowering People in Our Community) program which offers coaching and assistance for better employment and career opportunities.  Program dates are Jan 5 - June 20, 2015.  Contact Patricia Reilly at (616) 392-2368, ext. 113, to schedule an interview.
